Chapter 14
Serena looked confused. Why would Nadine be here? But Hunter ignored her question and merely dragged her by the arm toward the second floor.
The foul smell she’d noticed upon entering grew stronger with each step, making her grimace in disgust. “Hunter, where are you taking me? What is that awful smell?”
Hunter glanced at her sideways. “To see Nadine.”
His answer made Serena frown deeper. She couldn’t help but ask, “But isn’t Nadine dead?”
Hunter didn’t respond. He led her into the pitch–black second floor, and the stench was so overpowering she nearly gagged. Forced to feel her way through the darkness, she stumbled until her leg bumped against something, and Hunter finally stopped.
Then the lights flashed on, revealing Nadine’s corpse. Serena almost vomited on the spot.
“Hunter, are you insane? Why would you show me a dead body?” She screamed while covering her mouth, barely keeping herself upright.
But Hunter was acting like he was possessed and forced her closer, so close she could see maggots writhing beneath Nadine’s skin.
“Serena, don’t you remember? You killed her. You hired someone to break in and stab Nadine to death on the very day you returned to the country.”
The woman’s pupils shook violently. Her nose was now nearly touching the grotesque remains.
“But after that, Nadine was still alive!”
“Yes, she was alive that day—she could have stayed alive! But it’s you! Your malice made me reject her over and over!”
Hunter’s gaze turned razor–sharp as he suddenly released her. Serena almost collapsed onto Nadine’s body before scrambling away to vomit.
Then he revealed the truth. After being murdered, Nadine had been granted five extra days. One “I love you” from him could have revived her, but someone had kept getting in the way.
As he spoke, Hunter’s gaze locked onto Serena, his fury radiating through the room. Serena trembled violently, and her face turned ashen.
Finally understanding the depth of his anger, she instinctively began making excuses.
“I didn’t want to do this, but I love you, Hunter! I couldn’t stay your dirty secret forever! I wanted us to be together properly! I knew you’d never divorce Nadine, so I had no choice!
Chapter 14
“Hunter, don’t you believe me? Everything I did was out of love!”
The man’s expression twisted, his lips curling into a cruel smile. “You say you love me?”
Serena nodded,frantically, hope flickering in her eyes.
“If you love me so much, then where were you the year I had my accident? You’d immediately fled abroad. You only came back after hearing about my fortune. Is this how you love someone, Serena?
“It was Nadine who nursed me back to health! If you loved me, why weren’t you there when I needed you most?”
Each accusation shattered Serena’s fragile hope further. She hadn’t expected Hunter to
uncover even those old secrets.
Pale and shaking, she kept denying. “No… No… I didn’t return for money… Hunter, please believe me-”
Hunter’s face turned glacial. “Believing you got Nadine killed! I had countless chances to save her for the past five days, and you ruined every one! Your schemes and lies kept me from giving her the words she needed to live!”
With every word, Hunter’s grip tightened, and his rage grew. He choked Serena until her feet left the ground. Her face flushed crimson, her lips turned blue, and even her eyes rolled back as she lost the ability to speak.
Terror overwhelmed her–she’d never seen Hunter so unhinged and merciless. Tears spilled from Serena’s eyes as she struggled weakly against his grip, gasping out broken pleas.
“I–I’m… s–sorry… Hunter… Hunter…”
Each syllable cost her dearly, but Hunter didn’t relent. He watched coldly as her struggles weakened, as life slowly left her body.
