“Got it.” 

We said our good nights and hung up. Jeremy Colt was the last person I called. My conversation with him only increased my resentment for Nick. 

How could he have gone to my workplace to threaten my boss? People have lost their jobs for far less. 

“He thought I ran off with his son, that’s why. I’m so sorry.” 

“You know, I almost wished you would run away, but the kid needs his daddy. They’re not ordinary like us, Sara, you know that, right?” he counseled. 

I wished I could tell him that I was kidnapped. 

“The kid needs his mother more, sir,” I said instead. 

“I’m not saying he doesn’t. All I’m saying is y’all need to find a common ground. Instead of playing hide and seek with that boy.” 

Wait, did he think I tried to run away? I rolled my eyes. 

“I know it’s none of my business,” he went on. “But I love you like a daughter, and I don’t want any hurt to come to you. What, with all his power and influence. If you mess around, he could take the child away for good.” 

If he knew what really happened, he wouldn’t be lecturing me now, would he? 

“I hear you, sir,” I replied. 

We finished talking minutes later. I grabbed my robe and headed out to find Richard and give him back his phone. 

He was nowhere downstairs or in his office, so I headed up the same way I saw him go. 

It was nice and quiet. It occurred to me how oddly peaceful it was to move about the house 

when no one was in sight. 

I walked leisurely up the stairs to the other living room where my dad had waited. The place was empty but the TV was on and mute. Nick’s profile was on the screen as he ignored the paparazzi. 

I took the time to stand and watch. It had been four years since my eyes lingered on a TV longer than ten seconds. I recalled the last time I sat watching the news. It was the day

Chapter 0096 

Alpha’s Zion’s death was announced. 

We were still looking for a place to stay and had stopped at a small hotel near Joshua’s Tree. My dad had caught me watching him and his mother on TV and had lost it. He’d ripped the flat screen from the wall to slam it on the floor in anger. That day, I’d promised him never to keep tabs on Nick and his family anymore. 

I’d made that promise more to myself than to him. After that, I’d focused on the growing child inside me. 

A commercial came on TV and I remembered why I came out here. Richard’s phone was still in my hand. I turned around to leave when I heard a sound like a grunt. 

My eyes followed the noise to a door that stood ajar on the far side of the room. Maybe it was a mouse. The room was dark. Though not so much that I wouldn’t see a thing. I became curious. Not because of the noise, but the fact that the penthouse was big enough to have so many rooms. 

As I moved closer, I heard another sound. Like heavy breathing. Or someone trying to 

suppress a moan. 

I was reaching for the door when the unmistakable smell of sex stopped me. The sound of flesh slapping on flesh accompanied it. 

Any self–respecting female would’ve turned away. It was the decent thing to do. Instead, I couldn’t stop my eyes from peering through the small opening for just one glimpse. 

The woman’s face was the first thing I caught. A human woman indeed. One I knew quite well. 

My lawyer, Miss Suarez. On all fours. Shock held me frozen for a moment. 

The male’s face was impossible to see from where I stood. It was hard to sense who was behind the woman. Or inside her. The thick fragrance that now filled the air made it so. As I started to turn away, my gaze fell on the joggers pooled on the male’s feet. 

It was the same one Nick wore when I last saw him.
