Richard didn’t know what he was talking about. He didn’t know the whole story. If he did, he wouldn’t say it was all about protecting me.

But I wish he hadn’t mentioned it. Because now, my mind was more scattered than ever. I didn’t need this battle of struggling not to think of things from Nick’s perspective. What did it even matter? The past was the past. I hated him for all the hurt. That would never change!

I typed Avery’s number and dialed as I made the resolution.

‘I hate him now and forever!‘

Avery didn’t pick up the phone till it went into voicemail. I started to speak when he suddenly

answered.

“Sara! Where are you? How are you? My uncle said you called in sick. And that Reign guy was around to look for you. I tried to speak to your dad, but the line went off and I haven’t been able to reach him since. Please, tell me what’s going on! Where are you?”

It was with a deep sigh that replied, “You won’t believe the day I’ve had.”

“But you’re okay now, right? Is there anything I can do? I could come to you now if you want,” he offered. “Tell me what happened.”

I went silent. It felt comforting that there were people who would’ve missed me if Nick and his wolves hadn’t rescued us. Jane had been distraught when we talked earlier. Richard had looked at me like he was sincerely glad I was alright. And now Avery was offering to leave whatever he was doing to come to me.

“Sara?” he said.

“Yeah, I mean… no, you don’t have to come,” I said.

“Tell me everything,” he urged.

“Not on the phone, but we could eat lunch tomorrow. Will that be okay?”

“Of course. You’re with him, aren’t you? It has to do with him, right?”

“I’m not with him. I’m with Alex. But yeah, we’re at his place.”

When he went silent, I added, “I’m sorry. Something very serious happened today. I’ll explain it

when we see.”

Life was full of uncertainty and Avery was a good guy. A keeper. It’s only wise to start

appreciating the people who cared about me. I had to try and meet him half way. One way to do that was to open up to him.

I learned the hard way that I could never find happiness with the mate gifted to me. It was time to really stop letting my experience with the alpha keep me from finding it elsewhere.

Richard’s words didn’t matter.

I shook the painful memories away as Avery began to speak again.

“I might take his mother up on her offer.” His voice had an unfamiliar edge.

“What?”

“Yeah, Elise Reign visited me. Offered me millions of dollars to start a new life in New Zealand with you and your dad. She wants you to leave her grandson to the care of the Reigns,

” he said.

“What?” I asked, suddenly recalling the Luna asking me what I knew about Avery. Did this

mean she didn’t send the rogues after us?

“What do you say I take the cash and screw her over? We get Alex and leave here. All four of us. Get far away from those TOXIC people!”

“When did she come to you?” I asked him.

“Yesterday. What does it matter?”

“Why would she go to you? Why’s she so interested in you?” I wondered aloud.

He was silent for a moment. Then he replied, “Cuz I’m your boyfriend. Wait, I’m your boyfriend, right?”

“Avery, this isn’t a joke and I can’t believe you’re considering her offer!”

“Oh, excuse me for considering an opportunity to rescue my girl and her kid from trouble!”

It was my turn to be speechless. Avery had never spoken to me in this manner.

“Sorry, I’m just…” he breathed. “It’s frustrating, Sara. I hate that you’re in his house right now. I want to see you, but I can’t, not till tomorrow. Something went down today. Your father was at the hospital. Then he disappeared. Just like you and Alex. And I know nothing!”
