Chapter 0094
As I entered the hall, the housekeeper was waiting.
“Your room is ready, Miss James,” she announced with a smile. “But the Alpha wants me to tell you that you’re welcome to return to his bed if you want.”
“I’ll use my, I mean the room,” I replied. “Thank you.”
Moments later, I had changed into the nightdress she laid out. The silence of the whole house echoed around me. Though I knew Nick was around somewhere. I had felt his eyes on me when I walked my dad to the door.
Jake and Richard must’ve retired now.
This was the best time to reach out to my friends. Avery would’ve tried to call. He would be worrying at this moment. There was no need to tell him about the kidnap. Not yet at least. But he needed to know we were fine.
I started to look around for my phone but it was nowhere. It was impossible to recall the last time I had it. Maybe it was in Alex’s room. I set out to check.
When I entered my son’s little room, I caught him jumping back into bed. Sheets, askew. One of the lights was back on. He laid with one eye open, watching me.
“Choose your battles, Sara,” I breathed. Ignoring him, I began to look around for my phone.
When I couldn’t find it, I turned off the light again and started to head out.
“Go to sleep, Alex, I mean it! Don’t turn on the lights when I leave. I’ll be back to check!”
Once out in the hall, the footsteps coming up the stairs made me wait. I could sense who it might be. The gamma’s steps slowed as he came into view.
“Hey…”
“Hey, Gamma Rich!” I replied.
“You look much better now, I’m glad,” he said as his eyes softened.
I wanted to ask him about our attackers and why we were taken. But I doubt he would tell me. It was better to ask Nick.
“I’m looking for my phone,” I said instead.
“Oh, it’s broken. You’ll get another one tomorrow,” he replied.

“Can I borrow yours, please?”
“Sure,” he reached into his pocket and got it out.
“I’m sorry I called you sick that time. You were saving us and doing your job,” I told him.
He rewarded me with a kind smile.
“You know I’m still shocked by this whole thing. You and Nick?” He shook his head as if in disbelief.
“Also, the fact that he kept it from me is kinda disappointing, I’ll admit.”
I had no excuse on his alpha’s behalf. I wondered which came first. Was it his position as Chief Gamma or his friendship with Nick?
“It was a secret, Richard. I was his little secret,” I said.
“Jake knew. Then again, Jake’s his beta. Closer to him than I can ever be.”
The silence passed between us for a moment before I said,
“Thank you for rescuing us.”
“Alpha’s orders,” he shrugged. “But you’re welcome anytime.
Also, let me just say that you were a secret for good reason. The pack would’ve come after you if they found out. The Luna would’ve hurt your family, I mean REALLY hurt your dad. To prove her disapproval and make an example of you. The elders? They would’ve been enraged, Sara!
There was so much going on then. Nick could not have protected you from those folks. He was a college student with a whole lot on his shoulders.”
He sighed before adding, “Well, guess he did protect you. By making sure it stays a secret.”
“So you’re saying it was all for my sake?” I couldn’t keep the emotion from my tone.
“What, no? It was for HIS sake. Maybe you don’t know this, but the worst thing that can happen to us male wolves is not being able to protect our own from harm. Whether it’s our female, family, or even a close friend.”
I had so much to say to counter him, but my throat felt too tight.
He took my hand and pushed the cell phone into it.
“Here. If there’s anything you need around here, you can let me know.”

His words left me heavy–hearted as he proceeded towards the other stairs.
“I’ll come back for the phone in ten minutes,” he called out.
“Oh and… stop worrying about the pup. There’s a formidable beast in that kid. He’s waiting for
his time.”
