Chapter 0090
“What happened this morning?” Nick asked gently.
There was no trace of malice in his tone. Instead, there was curiousity. He really wanted to
know.
I already prepared my reply for when he blamed me. The whole thing was my fault, after all. I went over it in my head before speaking.
“Alex was upset. So was I. I wanted us to take the day off from everything. Then we got kidnapped. Thick neck was the cab driver.”
Nick frowned in confusion. “Thick neck?”
“One of the rogues,” I supplied.
He nodded, then fell silent. None of these would’ve happened if I’d gone to work as usual and let Alex stay in school.
I waited for the blaming to begin while sleep threatened to drag me back to the black void
any moment.
“Lindsey didn’t see you.” He seemed deep in thought.
“I didn’t use the car. She was on break when I snuck into the school. She would’ve tried to stop me, wouldn’t she?”
Why was the blame taking so long? I wanted to have done with it and close my eyes. I was prepared to tell him that none of this would’ve happened if he hadn’t disappointed Alex.
He said nothing. I wish I knew what he was thinking. He sat poised on the stool, regarding me with an expression I didn’t dare to name.
I couldn’t help but notice how the t–shirt hugged his perfectly broad chest. His hair was rough and uncombed. At that moment, he looked like the werewolf who was my lover in a different life.
As his eyes caught mine, I quickly looked away.
“Your boss said you called in sick. Were you truly sick? Or just upset?” he asked.
“Upset,” I murmured.
He stood up slowly as he spoke.
“The doctor had you checked out. He believes you’re alright… physically. But he said you were

mumbling about seeing a shrink? If you feel like you need mental evaluation, Jake will get someone to make an appointment with a local.”
“I’m fine!” I snapped. “I’m worried about Alex.”
“Our pup is fine. Mentally and physically!” he cut me off. “We are wild beasts, Sara. Me and him. We’re not squeamish at the sight of a little blood! In fact, the blood of an enemy is how we quench our thirst!”
I raked my mind to come up with a spiteful response, but there was none. Or my brain just wouldn’t cooperate right then.
“He’s a child!” I managed.
“He’s a werewolf. Like you, but more like me!” He returned firmly.
Then he rose from the stool and approached the bed. Leaning with both hands against the bed, he peered into my eyes before speaking again,
“Don’t ever put you or that child in danger like that again, you hear me. For everyone’s sake. Lindsey’s in trouble because of you, you know.”
I waited for more scolding.
“What made you mad exactly? Was it because I missed breakfast with the little one?”
As he rose, I missed the closeness.
“You let him down. He knew he wouldn’t see you for another few days after that breakfast,” I replied.
“I went out for a run and lost track of time. I didn’t mean to miss breakfast or the dinner
before.”
“You should tell him.”
“I have. Now I’m telling you.”
I nodded. All of the troubles of the day didn’t mean anything now with the alpha standing beside the bed.
My eyelids started to droop badly. He took a step back as he said,
“I should let you rest some more.”
Then he was gone.

The sounding of a ringing phone woke me up. Looking around the massive room, my gaze rested on a small desk phone now sitting beside the lamp. Or had it always been there?
The call had to be from within the resort. I reached for it, lifting the reciever to stop the chiming. I was about to drop it when my dad’s voice came through.
“Hello? Sara?”
“Oh, thank Goddess,” I breathed. “Dad.”
“You’re awake,” he said.
“Where… How?”
“I’m here. The both of us are. Alex, come say hi to your mother,” he called.
“Hi, mommy,” my son’s voice comes on the phone.
“Hey, my baby wolf. How’re you feeling? Where are you guys?” I asked, feeling so groggy and confused.
“We’re in a big room with chairs… and TV. Uncle Rich is here, and Janice,” Alex replied excitedly. “Daddy said you need to sleep to get better like I did.”
“Ah… I see,” I said.
After my little chat with my son, my dad was back on the phone.
“His men brought me here hours ago. You were asleep. He said you were in shock and needed a lot of calm. The beta brought this phone. He said we could talk to you if you picked the call. How’re you feeling?” he asked.
“Drugged,” I replied. That’s it! I was definitely drugged. What gave Nick the right to do that?
The realization came with another wave of drowsiness. It became hard to hang on to consciousness, especially after hearing my son and father’s voice. My baby boy was safe and with my father.
“You should get back to resting. If I’m not here when you wake up, you know where to find me,” my dad said.
“Mhmm… please stay,” I whispered as I let myself drift away.
I would deal with Nick’s bullshit once the drugs wore off.
