Chapter 0089
Alex sat with his favorite teddy clutched to his chest, allowing Doctor Raul to do his thing. On the other side of the room, a nurse treated my bruises, which was taking forever to heal.
The ointment stung a bit, but the pain didn’t feel like mine. I was focused on the little boy a few feet away. He didn’t look like we’d just been to hell and back.
Moments later, the doctor breathed a deep, satisfactory sigh. A signal that he was done with the child. Pushing the nurse’s hand away from my face, I stood up to go to him as he sat back like all of this was normal.
There was no trace of fear in his eyes anymore. Looking at him, no one would ever guess what had happened to us earlier.
Doctor Raul started to speak.
“He’s alright. No injuries whatsoever!”
Whatsoever? I wanted to ask. Including emotional or mental injury?
“You, on the other hand, need to get properly checked out, Miss James! Alpha Nick ordered me to look at the both of you, not just the child!”
“I’m good, doctor, honest. The bruises are healing nicely,” I replied.
“You look ill,” he said with a frown.
What would he say if I told him that the sight and smell of blood was the cause? It was easy to guess. He’d shake his head in pity for my poor, weak genes.
‘You missed being human by this much.‘
These derogatory words from my high school bullies echoed in my mind as I muttered,
“I’ll be alright.”
A knock sounded on the door. I braced myself, expecting it to be Nick. But it was Jake. He stood between the jamb, looking cleaned up now. Like the elite male of the pack that he was.
He winked at Alex before asking the doctor, “How’s it going?”
“Very well, except the Miss is refusing to get looked at,” he joked.
“I’ll let the alpha know. Maybe we’ll get someone to tie her up for you!” Jake replied, giving me a smirk as he shut the door.

Once it was just us and the doctor again, I asked gently,
“How’s my son? I mean mentally. He saw some… stuff.”
“Oh,” came the reply.
“He is well, Miss James. At least, he seems very much so to me. But if you’re worried, I’ll recommend a child psychiatrist to talk with him. The alpha has to approve, though, as you already know the situation. No one must know I was ever here!”
When I glanced Alex’s way on the bed, he was staring at us as if waiting for me to finish my chat and come to him. When I forced a smile his way, his smiled back and waved.
He did look so normal, but I couldn’t begin to imagine what he saw in that moment when Richard was carrying him out of the room. I was his mother. Yet I hadn’t dare turn around to see what Nick was doing to those men.
“He’s alright, Miss James,” the doctor smiled. “That is one tough pup! Blood is thicker, eh?”
His eyes grew gentle as he guided me back to the chair. Another knock came on the door. The nanny pushed a tray inside with what looked like tea. A glass milk jar sat beside it.
“I’d like to have him looked at, doctor,” I said. “Please.”
“Very well. I’ll talk to the alpha, and we’ll see about sending someone down here. Tea or milk?” he asked. “You look badly shaken.”
As he spoke, the nurse was already handing me the small glass of milk for Alex. I took it and went to sit beside him on the bed. When he took it from me, the nurse pushed the tray closer. I reached for the larger glass cup and helped myself with some milk, too.
The liquid felt divine as it travelled down my throat. I didn’t stop till I emptied the glass.
A deep calm settled upon me. Every single nerve in my body began to relax as I reached for a refill. I had barely drunk half of the second cup when I became too drowsy. To the point that sitting up straight became difficult.
I set the cup down and leaned further on Alex’s small pillow as the darkness descended.
The last thing I recalled was Alex spilling his milk on his shirt, the nurse handing him a wipe. with a soft smile as she showed him what to do.

When I stirred later, the Alpha’s distinct scent surrounded me. He was in the room. I knew this the moment I regained consciousness.

My eyes wouldn’t open at first. I reached for Alex, but he was not on the bed. I started to panic as I forced myself to sit up.
Nick sat on a stool beside the bed, watching me.
“He’s with your father. They’re both in the other living room.” His voice was soft.
I looked around with eyes half–shut. Of course, this wasn’t Alex’s. I was onto of a grand, kingsize four poster bed.
Moving my head slightly, I looked about to take stock of the strange environment. It was like a king’s bed chamber. Or an alpha’s. This was Nick’s room.
“How did I…” I trailed off, letting my head fall back on the fluffy pillow. No need to waste my strength on pointless questions. But why was I so sleepy?
