The only response that came from the gamma who should be watching my kid was the sound of her heart slamming in her chest. Mine did the same as I stared at her in horror.
At the same time, Alex’s teacher was walking by. When she saw me at the gate, she broke into a welcoming smile and approached.
“Mister Reign, what a nice surprise! Good morning.”
“Good morning, Mrs. Bright,” I forced myself to return her smile as I waited for her to give me the news.
“Miss James said there’s a family emergency. I hope it’s not serious,” she said.
“She did, huh?”
“Yeah. She picked Alex up this morning.”
“Ah…” I nodded like I knew what she was talking about. No cause for panic. They’re together, mother and child.
“What time this morning?” I glanced around at Lindsey and her partner again.
They stood outside the car now.
“Nine… ish,” replied the teacher. Her voice was hesitant, and I reverted my gaze to her. Fear had replaced the earlier cheerfulness on her face as she regarded me. Did I look that terrifying?
It was impossible to correct my expression, so I turned around swiftly and went back to my
car.
There’s no reason to be alarmed. Sara decided on spending the whole day with Alex today. It made sense because Alex was very upset this morning and didn’t want to go to school.
After all, this past weekend was the first time she ever went two whole days without the little one. She could’ve picked him up when Lindsey and partner were on break.
Despite these reasonable thoughts, alarm bells rang in my head. I started the engine and swerved into the busy street without looking. An oncoming car blared its honk as the driver hurled curses at me. As I sped towards her house, I told myself again and again that I was overreacting.
It took twenty minutes for real fear to settle in my gut.

Her new car was the first thing I saw when I entered the little street leading to her house. Sara and my pup weren’t home. I didn’t need to get out of the car to figure that out.
I summoned the courage to call her phone. But then she would have to pick up, wouldn’t she? If not, I couldn’t know for sure if she was ignoring me or in danger.
So many thoughts raced through my head as I made my way to her workplace. All of this fuss was probably unnecessary. Her job and her father’s business were right here. She couldn’t have left town. Not on her own. They had been taken.
I ignored the horrifying voice. When I pulled up in front of her office building, her boss, the halfblood, was just emerging. A human male was with him. He saw me and stopped. I could smell his mixed feelings towards me even though he couldn’t resist my authority. All the smile and good cheer from the first day we met had lessened. Sara told him our story, huh?
“Mr. Reign, what a surprise,” he greeted.
I had no time for pleasantries, but there was someone else with him, so… good behaviour, Nick.
“This is John. He works at the mayor’s office.” To the other male, he said, “Mr. Reign is the sole sponsor of the ongoing nature park.”
“Nice to finally meet you, sir,” the John guy smiled, extending his hand.
“Nice to meet you too, John,” I said curtly. “Could you give us a minute! Mr. Colt will get back to you soon,”
He seemed to jump at my impatient tone. His eyes hardened as he moved away.
“Sara’s not at work, is she?”
“Why do you -”
“I’ll be asking the questions, halfblood! You’ll just give me answers. Was she here today?”
He looked annoyed, but he answered, “No, she wasn’t. She called in sick this morning,” he replied.
“Did she say anything else to you?”
He swallowed, and I could feel him struggling to resist the pull that my aura commanded. He lost the battle and said, “You can’t just show up and disrupt their lives!”
“Are these your words or hers?” I took a step closer, and he moved back. I could sense someone’s intent eyes on us. It was the human guard in front of the building.

“Answer me, Colt!”
“She said she needed the day off. That’s all she told me,” he replied.
“Did she say where she was going?”
“She should be at home” he replied.
He was not lying. Though he hated and cursed himself for telling me this useless information.
“They’re not home,” I told him. “Where else do you think she might go?”
“I don’t know. They have no other… relative,” he replied. By that, he meant they had no pack.
Moments later, I sped away into the path that led to Sebastian’s food truck. I could feel Jake behind me now. Lindsey must’ve called him and Richard.
As I entered the street, I started to relax. The shop was open, and a few people stood in front of the counter getting their orders.
