Jane’s eyebrow lifted.
“You’ll be in the city?” she asked,
I nodded.
As she waited for me to go on, I wondered if Jet told her anything. I doubted Sara would invite her to the mating ceremony.
Please Goddess, let my guess be right.
Her wolf may have woken up but she wasn’t quite ready to be in the midst of all those beasts. It would be too much for her and a lot of responsibility for me. I wasn’t ready yet.
“Oh, and here’s another clause I want you to take a look at.”
I highlighted the part and pushed the phone towards her on the table. It was safer. I couldn’t risk touching her fingers.
“I don’t understand,” she said, zooming to read it carefully.
“It means that you CAN eat at a nice restaurant, if you want. Say the word, and Nasir would drive you there. You don’t need a male like Jet to buy you food!”
“You think I went with him because I wanted to eat expensive food? I can’t eat with a friend? Is that what you’re saying?”
F*ck!
“No, I didn’t mean it like that. Just that you could’ve used the card I gave you.” I heaved a tired sigh.
“Of course, you can eat with friends. You can take Sara, or Zira, or Dora, even Jeremy Colt, your boss. You can go with Lori. Pay for their meal, if you like. You can afford it. Use the black card. Buy whatever you want… or need.”
“How do you know all those people?” She asked with mild surprise.
Damn it. I was talking too damn much, and I couldn’t even stop.
“How do you know my friends?”
“They all work at the council, Jane. They’re part of the project somehow. How else? You know, one of them is my boss‘ female.”

“Dora doesn’t work at the council.”
Shit!
“All I’m saying is, this marriage is a good deal,” I deflected. “You wanna know why? Cuz I’m a great catch. I’m rich!”
That earned me an eye roll.
“And proud, Janet,” I added calmly. “I wouldn’t have another male feeding my wife. I am all you need. F–for the next few months. Understood?”
She swallowed, batting her eyes before lowering it to the phone.
“You didn’t put that in this agreement?”
“Yes, I did. I just showed it to you. The recent yellow highlight. That part covers it.”
Her phone buzzed. The same sound that saved us both yesterday. She glanced at it. I knew it was her overbearing mother from the look on her face.
I wondered what the hateful woman would say when she discovered that her child had crossed from human into her supernatural side.
“I’ll have to get back to work now. You can stay. Maybe eat something. Nasir is waiting outside to get you home once you’re ready to leave.”
She stood up before I did. “I have to leave, too.”
We left the restaurant together. Soon, Nasir had driven her away and I was on my way to the resort when my phone rang. It was Richard.
“What’s up?”
“I couldn’t reach Nick. Do you know if he’s back from New York?” he asked.
“Back here or L.A? Last time I checked, he was about to get on the plane to come here. That’s some three hours ago. I’m guessing he’s at Sara’s. But you and I are leaving for the city soon. He’ll meet us back there tonight,” I told him.
“Got it. Oh, our ride is waiting. Let’s head back together,” he said.
“Sure. I’m on my way,” I replied and hung up.
I was a few yards from the runway and decided to check on Nasir to find out if he’d gotten the wife home. He picked up on the first ring, which meant he wasn’t driving.

“Hey, beta,” he greeted.
“So she’s home now, right?”
“If you mean her mom’s place, yeah,” he replied.
Silence. He sensed my displeasure and quickly added.
“She said she’s not spending the night. Told me to come back in a few hours. Her friend
came by.”
“You left because she told you to? What friend? Was it Miss James or another colleague from
work?”
“No, it’s Jet Chase. I didn’t want him t–to see me waiting. I’m not far from her street at all…”
My lips clenched at the sound of that name as my fist tightened on the wheel.
Okay, she hasn’t done anything wrong. He went to her house. Right now, she was probably telling him that they couldn’t see each other anymore. That was what she would do after our
little chat moments ago.
I sent Richard a short text saying I would be a few minutes late. Then did a u–turn. Redialing
Nasir’s number, I asked,
“Did he go inside the house or what?”
“They were talking in front of her porch when I left. I don’t know if he’s still there,” he replied.
Once I reached a convenient place, I pulled over, took off my clothes and dove into the woods.
Why was I doing this? I needed to see if Jet was in her house. If they were still hanging out or anything like that. What if they were? Then Jet and I would have that talk today!
As I jogged past the towering trees, I could feel different werewolves around. Patrol guards, mostly.
One of Richard’s men was behind me. He was so close that I wondered if he was following me. I didn’t pay him much attention.
I arrived at my destination alone in no time. The wolf behind me had gone his way. Or so I thought. It was nearly 7 PM and getting dark. But the last light for the day still lingered. If I wasn’t careful, someone could see me.
So I remained far inside the woods, hiding behind a tree as I peered at her window. The girl was home alright. So was her mother. There was no other presence in the house but the two.

Chapter 0204
Both were talking in loud, angry voices. I wanted to move close to scan Jane’s feeling. To find out what was making her upset. But I could guess. She was out all night and the older woman was probably being her usual, overbearing self.
As I took a step closer, I sensed another presence. Not in Jane’s house, but behind me. A distinctly familiar one. I knew this presence as much as my own shadow.
I turned around slowly and there he was. Nick leaned against a tree many yards away, watching me with cool reserve.
