There was no trace of disdain in those words. Wait, was she happy for the two of them? My blood ran hot with annoyance. 

They had lunch. That was all. It’s not like they were getting mated tomorrow. If I spoke these thoughts out loud, she might grow suspicious. So I bit back the words and turned the focus on her silly request earlier. 

“You know, it’s Tuesday. You should be busy helping out at the national park. My answer’s No. You can not go to L.A for what is hardly your business.” 

“Did you just say hardly my business? I can’t believe this. The sergeant fought with Kyle because of me, Jake! Did you forget already?” 

“How did you know he has a thing for you? Did he tell you that himself? Cuz he laughed really 

hard when I mentioned it.” 

Her eyes flashed with what looked like hurt? I was too unfocused, so that may have been mere irritation. 

“Don’t ask how I know. Us females can tell sometimes,” she replied. 

Sometimes was the keyword here if she changed it to Never or No time. 

I knew for a fact that that comment was inaccurate. Because Sara, for instance, didn’t know 

that she consumed every bit of the Alpha’s thoughts. He had to spell it out in plain words for 

her. 

I was not in the mood to argue about the female instinct. So I redirected my gaze to my 

screen.

“Just know I’m not asking for permission. I’m informing you,” she added. 

“I’m starting to think you’re right. It is your fault that Rowan’s about to face the council.” 

“Who’s Rowan?” 

Ignoring the question, I went on, 

“The male’s into Sara, so you’re deluded. But let’s say you’re under the impression that it’s you he wants. How could you bring your boyfriend to this tiny town, knowing you two could run into him?”

“That is the lamest thing I’ve ever heard. You’re saying I can’t bring my boyfriend to town if another guy likes me? Are you serious right now?” Her voice rang with anger. 

Why did females think it was okay to get two males to kill each other? Elise, Sara, Aylin, now 

Jane? 

“I can’t even believe I’m entertaining your fallacy. Rowan’s not interested in you. Also, didn’t you say you didn’t want Kyle?” 

“Newsflash! I can change my mind too. And why the hell are you so angry? You know what, I don’t care.” She began to stomp off. 

“I’m not asking permission like I said. I can go wherever the hell I want. I only told you 

because dad asked me to.” 

Did she just ask why I was so angry? That should be my line. What did I say that got her so worked up? She had tasks to finish here. The week had only just begun. Surely, she didn’t 

think I would allow her to go see the sergeant. And what for? 

“I’ll get lunch snacks at SEBASTIAN’S. You can eat alone!” She bellowed. 

I went after her, grabbing her by the arm and pulling her back to the car. She didn’t try to struggle as I opened the door and made her sit down. 

There were no more words between us after that. We rode quietly to Sara’s father’s truck to get our lunch packs. 

As I drove us back, I decided this was all Nick’s fault. It was his orders that kept me in this town till now. I wouldn’t have known if Jane ate with Mister Royal or not if I’d left for the city 

sooner. 

The girl and I needed to address something very important. I couldn’t stand this feeling. She must’ve seen the file I sent and was probably stealing glimpses at it right now. 

Only a few hours before close of work. We had to see before I left town today. Once I returned to my Study, I brought out my phone and sent her a quick text. 

“We need to talk. Nasir will bring you to me after work.”
