Chapter 0198
“Nasir should be here in a few minutes.”
His voice cut off my self–disgust.
I nodded. I didn’t trust myself to open my mouth. Minutes later, we emerged by the side of the road. A car approached in the distance. From the way he stared at it, I knew that was our ride.
It took a few moments to discover that it was MY ride and not ours.
There is no Our, Jane. Nothing like that.
As I got into the backseat, he shut the door without looking at me. Then he nodded once at the Nasir guy who cut into the street.
All I could think was that he would call an Uber or his new town cab friend. They would drive him straight to that other woman.
With the boner I gave him.
The thought made me nauseous. I turned around to look at him as the car sped away, but he no longer stood by the roadside.
Where did he go?
I didn’t know I had asked aloud till Nasir replied under his breath.
“For a run, most likely. He looks like he needs it so bad.”

Jake didn’t come to the big house that night. I tossed and turned in the ridiculously comfy bed throughout, reliving the evening.
He’s with another. A woman that isn’t dumb enough to sign a marriage contract.
Maybe he was in his fancy suite at that resort, thinking of the “complications” that had risen now that we’d crossed his stupid line. Wait, did we even cross the line? It was just a kiss. We didn’t go all the way.
And that’s a good thing for both our sakes.
I kept telling myself these words until sleep dragged me into unconsciousness at past 4 AM. Three seconds after I shut my eyes, morning came.
The memories of the night before assaulted me the moment I woke up. I was glad it was a

new day and determined to put my mistakes behind me. So I bolted out of bed to get ready
for work.
I hadn’t packed anything yesterday. When I arrived back in town, I had followed Nasir here to merely see the location before heading to the house to face my mom.
I started to worry about what to wear to work when a soft knock came on the door.
A maid.
Apparently, the marriage contract came with a new wardrobe. Which sat a few feet from my bed. How I would’ve loved to tell Jake to go to hell with the fancy new clothes. But the thought of going home this morning to change was unappealing.
Soon, I’d had my morning tea, was ready, and out the door. Before long, I arrived at the council. A familiar, safe environment. My own normal and peaceful existence. At least, it still
felt a little bit like that.
As I got out of the cab, the first person I saw was a surprise. Jet. He stood like he was waiting for someone. The blankness in his expression didn’t give away much. But I was seeing him with new eyes indeed.
Werewolf.
“Hi,” I said. “Waiting for Sara or ?”
“You. I was waiting for you.”
His brow furrowed as his eyes moved over me.
“I didn’t get your number yesterday and didn’t want to miss you during lunch.
I wanted to ask how he knew I worked here but recalled that Sara had called him by name yesterday. She must’ve told him we we’re colleagues. Maybe Nick did.
I reached out and took his phone.
After typing my cell number, he breathed,
“Thanks. I’ll see you in at noon.”
I actually couldn’t wait. A date would help me erase the shame I felt about last night. Hopefully.
When I turned around to head inside, Sara had just gotten out of her car and was coming towards me.

Her gaze moved from Jet to me, a knowing smile lifting the corner of her mouth.
As she drew a few feet closer, her eyes narrowed as if assessing me, then she broke into a grin, mumbling,
“Yesss, finally. Oh, thank the Fate!”
