Chapter 0195
Jane POV
Jake’s eyes shone like sparks of electricity as he advanced. His mouth parted and I could’ve sworn those were fangs peeking out of them. He seemed larger and almost beastly.
“Y–your eyes,” I stammered.
He halted a few feet from me, the light vanishing from his eyes. They still glinted but they merely reflected the moonlight now.
“What about my eyes?” He asked in an irritated tone.
“They… were… shining,” I mumbled hesitantly.
“So were yours!”
“Really?”
Why did that make me feel good? I looked down at the dead hare before me and sucked in a deep breath
Something was different. A separate presence had just come alive inside me. Powerful. Watchful. Expectant. I could feel it.
So Jake wasn’t joking about the werewolf?
Nah! Nope. I refused to think about that just yet. I was ravenous.
“I’ll make a fire,” He said like he heard my thought.
Picking up the kill, he started to walk off. I followed him.
Soon, we were sitting across from each other as dinner cooked by the fire between us.
The moon was not the only thing that provided lighting now. The fire which he made to cook the meat created a sufficient ball of light around us.
He was watching me. It wasn’t annoyance or lust I felt in those penetrating gaze now. It was curiosity. He wanted to know how I felt. He wanted me to say something. I could sense this because I felt closer to him now.
I told myself that it was normal to feel this way given my little hunting adventure.
My eyes remained on dinner. The aroma made my mouth watered.

Minutes later, the meal was cooked. Jake remained silent. Somehow, I sensed that he could tell I didn’t wish to speak till I ate. Tearing off a piece, he handed it to me. I reached out and took it.
When I bit into it, I was taken aback by the taste. It was far from what I expected – juicier and tastier than the meat we cooked at home. Which we bought from the grocery store.
I caught Jake’s half smile as he watched me chew. The light from the fire danced in his eyes. I was momentarily distracted by how gorgeous and manly he looked with his unbuttoned shirt and rolled up sleeve.
“More.” I demanded.
He obliged me, tearing off another huge piece and handing it over.
My mother would be appalled if she knew what I was doing right now. I realized that I didn’t care at all. There was an odd sense of freedom settling over me as I ate.
This moment was perfect. It felt like everything was happening the way it should. This me, sitting by the fire, eating a hunted meat, was part of who I was.
I was about to speak when Jake handed me another piece. Our fingers brushed. I forgot what I wanted to say.
He’d touched my hand all evening when he showed me how to shoot with the slingshot. Yet I still hadn’t gotten used to the electrifying thrill that accompanied his touch. The tremor travelled all the way to my stomach and further down.
“I know you’re thinking now what,” he said.
Biting into a piece, he chewed leisurely, licking the oil from his lips.
“Yeah,” I replied. “Now what?”
“Now we wait for the full moon. Which is a few weeks from now,” he replied.
I nodded even though I didn’t fully understand.
“What happens then?”
“She will emerge,” he replied.
“The werewolf,” I said, laughing at how bizarre that sounded.
At that moment, I recalled all of the stories I’ve read and seen, then decided it was best to put my situation out of my mind. For now. I would wait patiently for this next full moon to see

What scared me the most was that I actually believed every word he spoke. From the moment the hare breathed its last, a humming had begun inside me. A gentle song of waiting. This feeling didn’t rid me of the confusion and anxiety I felt.
Had my life truly changed?
I decided it was best to switch topics to one less scary.
“About my cure-”
“It’s all related to tonight’s hunting,” Jake cut me off. His tone was curt.
“We need to finish up. I still have work to do, so I’d like to get you home as soon as possible.”
