Jake POV
I could feel Jane’s perplexity as she stared at me.
However, there was another feeling underneath. What I just told her sounded like something she already knew. Realization shone in her eyes as she breathed,
“You’re saying that this other half is part of who I am… and it’s an actual wolf?”
Better. SHE’S a proud, supernatural she–beast made by Goddess herself.
I considered shifting right there to show her but discarded the idea quickly. That would be too much. She needed to gradually come to the knowledge of her true nature.
I had heard of half–bloods losing their minds for the first first few months when they learned about their other side. Especially those who didn’t find out quick enough – before they came of age, that is.
It usually took years for some to recover from such a madness. I didn’t have that time and didn’t want that for my mate. I needed her sane. My own sanity and freedom were on the line here.
The more I thought about it, the more I hated her parents. Especially the werewolf that got her mother pregnant. If he stuck around, Jane would’ve met her wolf when she was eighteen. Like every other female of the species.
“Look, Jane, the only way to begin to understand all of this is to do this first part,” I assured her.
“Killing?”
“Hunting,” I amended.
“Your boss, Nick…” she said. “Well, he told me to call him by his first name because Sara and I are friends.”
Her tone was defensive and boastful like she was arguing with someone. Probably the she- wolf within her, who recognized Nick as her Alpha.
“Alright,” I remarked gently,
That was my simple assurance to her that I was okay with the first–name basis between them.

She nodded and then went on,
“NICK said the woods is dangerous at this time. He said we shouldn’t hunt for another what, two weeks? No, ten days. He said ten days.”
“He’s right. People like you and Sara shouldn’t go there alone for now. But… you’ll be with me. So you’ll be safe, and I promise he’ll be alright with it if he sees that I’m protecting you.
C’mon.” I held the door for her to get into the car.
She opened her mouth to say something but closed it and entered the car.
A small feeling of triumph stirred. I had more advantage than that McHandsome alpha- scented male. I was her mate.
The only reason she still disagreed with me was because she was fighting the attraction. That fight would end once she knew why she felt the way she did. Hopefully, she would cancel that lunch date with Jet once this night was over.
But what did it all matter? I had to remember that I was doing this to secure my freedom. Not to win the girl. Then again, it wasn’t right for another male to have her attention when our bond was still in place.
Focus on what’s before you, Jake. Her prelim hunt.
Sara made the right move. Now was the best time to awaken her she–wolf. I wondered if they would’ve succeeded if Nick hadn’t shown up.
After I told the cab guy where to go, the car was silent till I spoke.
“Do you know how to use a gun?”
The driver peered into the rearview mirror, his mouth falling open.
“To kill a deer,” I added, rolling my eyes. “We’re going hunting, mister.”
“Oh I see,” he mumbled, refocusing on the road.
“No, I don’t,” Jane replied with a shake of her head.
“What weapon were you and Sara going to use before?”
She reached into her bag and pulled out a slingshot, then a hunting knife. Less threatening for her.

“You know you’ll have to eat your kill, right?”
“Just tell me what it’s about,” she insisted.
I looked from her to the driver. She relaxed, understanding that I couldn’t talk when another pair of ears sat inches away.
Minutes later, I showed the cab guy where to stop. He started to pull over as I reached for the few hundred dollar bills in my back pocket.
“Thank you, sir,” the driver said as I pushed the cash into his hands.
“Why don’t you take my number? I’m always available. If you need me to drive you to the airport maybe?” He offered.
“You know I have a car, right?” I drawled.
“Yeah, I mean, if you don’t feel like using it. Like today. Just know I’m available anytime,” he replied with a grin.
“Sure.”
I let him type his number into my phone quickly.
As we got out of the car, Jane gave me an odd look.
“What?”
“Nothing,” she mumbled. “Didn’t think the rich threw money away any chance they get.”
Was she complaining that I overpaid the man? I shook the unimportant thought away.
Moments later, I was leading her into the woods, careful not to put my hand on her waist.
Her intrigue and curiosity mingled with the scent of the night, making me feel like I was in a dream. A strong sense of peace overcame me, coupled with a longing for something I didn’t understand.
“So, tell me,” she breathed, glancing in my direction. “My other half. She seeks to come out, you say.”
“Yes. Do you know how to use that thing?” I asked, gesturing at the weapon in her hand.
“Yeah, I do. So she’s a wolf like wolf wolf?”
I stopped walking. She did too.
