“But,” Nick continued. “It’s getting dark, and this period is not a good time.”
His large hands moved back and forth between Sara’s waist and hips. She exhaled, leaning on his chest as she sagged her shoulders. Like she had known he would disapprove.
“You two should try this again in… say, ten days,” he murmured against her ears.
Oddly specific. I wanted to ask what was wrong with “this period” and why ten days later would be a good time. But there was something in his manner that made me feel he wouldn’t be taking questions in this matter.
“This place isn’t safe for hunting at the moment, Sweets,” he said to Sara.
“We’ll take care of the trouble makers soon so that you two can come out here and play all
you want.”
She nodded, breathing, “Alright.”
Another footstep disturbed the drying leaves on the ground. My eyes‘ and Sara’s followed the
sound as a man came into view.
I knew him from Saturday, when Jake and I had our first date. He was fully clothed today in a dark brown camouflage.
“Jet, hi,” Sara said with a bright smile.
He waved at her as his eyes rested on me.
“Jane, this is Jet. He’ll make sure you get home safe,* Nick said. “I have to steal your friend for the evening. Hope you don’t mind.”
“Oh of course not. I don’t mind,” I smiled.
For some reason, I knew that they wouldn’t make it to his penthouse before he had his way with her.
I couldn’t stop myself from imagining Jake doing the same things to me in these woods.
“See you tomorrow, Sara.” I waved at the two. They waved back as Jet and I started to head
back.
I could feel the new arrival watching me as we walked quietly. He looked away when I glanced in his direction.
We were getting close to the main road when the silence got too awkward, so I spoke.

“So you are a forest ranger, aren’t you?”
Instead of a direct reply, he asked,
“Did you ever live in New Zealand?”
“No. Why?”
”
“Just you look like someone I know.”

Was he hitting on me? Maybe I should tell him I was married. But that was against the rules. Plus, I didn’t have a ring to prove it.
“Don’t I look familiar to you?” he asked gently.
He did.
“Nope. Not at all.”
He was handsome. If I wasn’t married, I’d probably flirt back, but too bad. I wondered what Jake’s little agreement said about entertaining other men. Or women, in his case.
Shit, wasn’t that the second thing I should have looked at before signing? Well, maybe not,
since we would never be intimate.
“Hmm, ok,” Jet breathed.
“I saw you that night, you know. You came into the woods, drunk and in your pajamas.”
The words made me stop abruptly, causing him to bump into me. I was about to fall when he reached out to steady me.
“Careful,” he mumbled.
“Guess I shouldn’t have said that. No need to be embarrassed, Jane. The Alph… Nick, I mean. Nick is right. Coming out on your own here isn’t safe for now. Give it another two weeks before you try to awaken your wolf.”
I stopped walking. It felt like he was speaking a language that I knew but had forgotten as he
went on.
“That is the best time to rouse her cuz the moon would be waxing. If you’re able to kill a squirrel or a rabbit, she should emerge within a week or two. And you’ll be the female you’re always meant to be. Free and whole.”
He smirked once he was done.
