That was better than no deal, so I nodded at the same time as the waiter arrived.
I stared at the menu but couldn’t really see anything. I was more focused on steadying my breath when he said,
“You know, when we’re married, it’ll be against the rules to worry about other males.”

Forty–eight hours later.
The contract guaranteed one hundred percent wellness within three months of marriage. All that was required was for me to “release Jake Carlisle” from some sort of “supernatural bond, ” which could only be revealed once I was cured.
After making him stipulate that this supernatural bond didn’t involve killing anyone, hurting my family or friends, selling any one of my organs, or moving to a strange country, I decided that I could take the chance. Besides, it shouldn’t hurt to be married to the hunk, no matter how brief.
On Monday at dawn, Jake sent a car to get me to the airport, where I boarded a plane headed for California. Because we had to be discreet, that was the best place to get our marriage license. The neighbouring towns weren’t good enough, and my very own Orphic Valley was out of the question.
Twenty–three minutes before my “wedding,” I arrived at city hall.
Jake was waiting for me. By some magic, I knew he was there even before seeing the familiar SUV sitting in the parking lot. He got out and jerked his chin towards the majestic entrance, motioning that I headed inside.
Was he hiding from people here as well? Not my problem.
I went inside, and within thirty–eight minutes, I came out a married woman. Soon, we had signed the certificate and taken the necessary photographs.
As we got out of the building, he said,
“Do you want to head back right away or look around the city?”
When I hesitated, he said,
“Donald will drive you around or to the airport. He’ll take you to a restaurant to eat first. Tell him what you want to do. Here.”

As he spoke, he was handing me a black card.
“What’s this?” I asked hesitantly.
“It’s a credit card,” he replied.
A heavy–built bald guy in an expensive jacket approached. That must be the Donald.
“Uh…no,” I said. “I can buy my own food, thank you.”
“I know. Take,” he insisted in that tone I’d grown quickly conversant with. The same tone that had me complying with all his demands.
I reached for the card as he went on,
“You’re my wife now. Where I come from, that means you don’t buy your own food. Means you don’t buy “your own” anything, got it? It’s just three months, so you’ll have to bear with it.”
I didn’t catch everything he was saying. He was talking too fast, and I’d been distracted from the moment he said you’re my wife now.
“Now, once you get back to town, Nasir will be waiting at the airport to take you to the house.”
“What house?”
“Thought you said you read the contract?” He asked with a frown.
“It didn’t say anything about a house,” I replied.
His brow furrowed. “You must’ve missed that part. I’ll send you a soft copy so you can go through it again.”
“Jake, I can’t move house. That’s ridiculous. What do you think my mother or other town’s people would say? I thought you don’t want anyone to know?”
He seemed to consider what I’d just said and sighed.
“Unfortunately, it can’t be helped, WIFE. You can’t live in your current house if we’re to cure you soon enough. Don’t forget the purpose of this whole thing – to get rid of the sleep disorder
–
“And unchain your hands and feet and heart,” I cut in.
“Yes, that too. You’re smart. Make up a story. Think of a lie to tell your mother cuz moving house IS part of the deal.”
He turned to leave. I wanted to argue, but what fell out of my mouth was,

“Where are you going?”
“Back to work,” he replied.
As much as I tried to hide my disappointment, it must’ve shown because he added in a
gentler tone,
“I have to work, petal. I have another mouth to feed now.” He winked at me before turning away to face the Donald guy.
Apparently, merely looking at the one who was to be my chauffeur was some form of silent communication. He nodded at Jake and said to me,
“This way, Mrs. Carlisle.”
