Ten minutes later, I stood with my back to the door inside Nick’s large office at the resort. He didn’t come in here except strictly to deal with resort business. With my hands crossed behind my ass, I perched against the door, waiting to learn more about the guests.
‘You don’t look alright. Are you alright?‘ Nick mindlinked.
I clenched my fist. If I had a nickel for every time he’d asked me that question in the last twenty–four hours, I could probably buy my way out of the mess I was in right now. Assuming
the Fate accepted cash.
‘I’ll be alright,‘ I replied. ‘If you’d stop asking me that, Alpha.‘
Richard looked from me to him. He wanted in on the conversation, but he also seemed
furious. His guys were supposed to be patrolling the woods. How did they not see the two
males sneak into the town?
Both now sat across from Nick, waiting calmly for his interrogation. Like they knew what Richard was so desperate to ask.
“We flew in about an hour and a half ago. Lily lent me her jet,” said the male with the alpha
scent.
“We can kick Laz‘ ass on our own, Jethro Chase,” Nick said gently. “We don’t need anyone’s help. Just don’t take his side, and we’ll keep being friends. And family, of course.”
“I’m sure the Forest Moon can fight him on their own, Alpha. You have the malepower and resources. We’re not here for the war. Your mother just wants us working with your warriors, that’s all. Whether it’s guarding the woods or your home in the city.
“The heir still lives in this town, I hear. The senior Luna is merely worried and is doing what she can to protect her own. This place is part of the Forest Moon now. She wants me to tell you that you’re responsible for ALL the wolves and half–bloods living here whether you like it
or not.
I mean, something terrible could’ve happened to that young, drunk half she–wolf earlier. Ask your beta over here.”
Stop talking!
Nick and Richard’s gazes turned to me. I should not have looked away. Young, drunk half she- wolf didn’t translate to sleepwalker, so my secret was safe. Hopefully.
“If she had run into a werewolf other than your beta… or that half–blood warrior, she could’ve

gotten badly hurt,” Jet blabbered on.
I wished he would shut up. Or stick to the topic at hand.
Without another word, Nick picked up his cell phone and dialled a number. I knew he was calling Elise before he began speaking.
“Hello, mommy,” he said in a mocking tone. “I met your errand boy.”
I gauged Jet’s reaction. He didn’t seem affected by the insult. His friend did, scowling at Alpha Nick before lowering his gaze.
“What would you do if I ended his life right here, huh? Mail you their heads in a neat little box,’ Nick lulled mockingly as his hard eyes settled on the male sitting across his desk.
Everybody went still. The other male. Clove or what’s his name became rigid. Claws were picking out of his fists as the scent of fear filled the air around us.
I couldn’t hear Elise clearly as she seemed to be keeping her voice down. But her reply
indicated that she didn’t take her son’s threat seriously.
“You sent an alpha–blooded male who has no pack into my home? In such a time as this when half the pack thinks my mate is the wrong choice? Are you out of your mind, mother?”
Nick asked.
She barked on the other end, saying something about the male being family.
“I don’t care if my sister’s married to his brother!” Nick retorted.
He tightened his lips as Elise went on with her scolding and lectures. A few moments of more arguing, and he hung up. The Jet guy began speaking immediately.
“Alpha Nick, please listen to me. I do not mean to cause any political trouble at all. I would remain in the woods and stay hidden most times. Your people won’t even see me. I swear I only mean to help-”
“Why? We don’t really know each other!” Nick cut him off.
“You’re right, we don’t,” the male exhaled as if bracing himself before he spoke again.
“Alpha Laz owe me a debt. If you’re going against him, I want to stand with you,” he said confidently. “Please.”
My focus was divided as the male continued his speech.
