“I can’t hunt, Sara, you know that,” Jane said. “My mom would freak if she found out that I knowingly went to the forest. You know how she feels about that sort of thing.”
Yeah, I know how desperate she is to keep you from the truth.
“We could sneak off during the day. Maybe on a Sunday? When the sun’s up,” I replied with a deep sigh.
She gave a brief laugh before remarking,
“Now I see why my mom thinks you’re kind of a bad influence.”
“Really? She does?” I was shocked. Although I’ve always sensed the older woman’s dislike for my kind.
“Well, she didn’t exactly say you’re bad influence, but yeah. It’s what she thinks,” Jane replied
with a nod.
Mrs. Brown was always cordial. Had she really spoken unpleasant things to her daughter about me? I told myself that if so, she had her reasons. There was no point taking it personally.
“I’m sure hunting will be fun, but I sleep in on Sundays, and I like it that way.”
“We can go when you wake up then. Before your mom returns from the late morning Mass.”
“So does that mean I’m getting the contacts if I agree?”
Yup, I thought. In twenty–seven days. If you kill something.
I nodded.
“Why did that bitch call you weak little shit?” She asked.
Damn it!
My attempt at diverting her focus from such details of the encounter hadn’t worked.
“And
you
said this is the Forest Moon. What does that even mean?”
I would take my darling pup’s interrogation over being in the car with her right now.
At least, it took mere seconds for little Alex to find another interest. Saying “I’ll explain later,” meant I didn’t always have to provide answers to his tough questions. It worked 90% of the
time.

I guess that style was only effective with three–year–olds. Which meant there was no escape for me no matter how hard I tried to change the subject.
When I glanced at my friend it looked like she was about to scream from frustration.
“Forest Moon. Night Storm. Are those from a video game? Who’s your Alpha?”
My cell phone buzzed just as I was pulling into the council’s driveway. I let out a slow breath of relief at the interruption. When I saw that it was Nick calling, all feelings of restlessness
dissolved into thin air.
“I have to take this,” I said to Jane without looking at her. Turning off the engine, I got out of the car as she started to grumble about how annoying I was.
“How’re you?”
Nick’s voice filtered through the receiver. The remnants of all my worries from the afternoon floated away at the sound.
“I’m good. The day has been such fun,” I chuckled.
“I got the call from your gamma,” he said, a smile coloring his voice.
“I’m alright, Alpha. Your guys are watching over me. I can handle anyone who’s female like I am,” I replied confidently.
“That’s my sweet girl,” he purred.
“Archer said you showed off my mark.” His voice rang with pride and joy as he said this.
“Well, she was talking rubbish. She left me no choice.”
“That was fantastic, Sweets. You did great. Goddess, I want to hold you so much right now,” he breathed deeply. “I miss you.”
“I miss you, too, Nick. When will you be back?”
“Tonight. Dinner. Listen, Celia and her people will never bother you again, don’t worry.”
“I’m not worried about her, Nick. I told you. She’s a female like I am. I can handle the likes of her.”
“Her father and I have got beef,” he informed me.
“Really? But he was here just last night.”
“Yeah, that’s when I learned about our discord. So the thing is, she’s not even supposed to

enter the town at all.”
I gave a soft laugh. “What ARE you, a mafia?”
“Worse. You know, us male werewolves are much more territorial than any mafia you read about in those smutty books you like so much.‘
I was going to ask how he knew the types of novels I read. Then I recalled he once told me that he found out four years ago.
“They’re not… smutty. Just romance with a little…” I couldn’t finish the sentence because he was too right.
All of my favourite books were downright smutty, especially the ones I read nowadays.
