‘Jake, Jake!‘ I barked, rushing to his side.
‘Hm?‘ He jerked his gaze in my direction.
It seemed like he was struggling to shake off the panic. His eyes returned to the half–blood sleepwalker, heading our way.
‘Hey, Jake, look at me,‘ I urged. ‘Get it together. She’s walking while asleep. Nothing bizarre. It’s just a human affliction. Like obesity.‘
‘Yeah, I know!‘ He snapped. ‘I… she’s not all human, Nick.’
‘Then she’s probably possessed by the energy from the Hunter’s moon,‘ I remarked.
I was vaguely aware that this type of illness was a dangerous one for a female. Her case was obviously severe given the fact that she came out of her bedroom – out of her house and into
the street. She was heading into the forest.
Jake watched intently, curiosity replacing the panic in his eyes.
‘Would you wait here then? I’ll do a quick scan at Sara’s before we head to the cell,‘ I said to him.
But my beta was half–listening. He forced his paws to move, indicating that he would rather come with me. Though his movement was hesitant.
‘Something bad could happen to her. Wolves are all over the place tonight.‘
It felt like he was talking to himself. I needed to check on my family first before anything else, so I replied,
‘Wait here and keep an eye on her. I’ll be a few minutes,‘
As I glanced at the female again, I realized I’d seen her before. She was Sara’s colleague at the council.
What a strange illness this was. How could she be deep in slumber and walking around like that. Eerie indeed.
My guess? The dormant wolf inside of her was half–awake. Roused by the night and the sound of its kind. The wild called to her.
The sound of werewolves, mating in the distance, made me refocus ahead. I resumed walking towards Sara’s.

If things were as they should be, she would still be in my arms. I imagined us coming out to play like others of our kind.
On a night like this, with me by her side, her wolf would not be afraid to come out of her hiding. What I wouldn’t give to claim my female again and again between these trees.
Beneath these stars.
I consoled myself with the thought that my fantasies would soon be made real. Sara and I would have our ceremony. And we would live together as mated couples. Which meant many
more full moons were in store for us.
Jake still followed me hesitantly. Our strides were slow, and his eyes remained on the sick
female.
We’d taken another few steps when something registered. Someone was after the girl. Jake stopped.
He seemed truly disturbed. Maybe I would be too if my mind wasn’t already preoccupied.
I sighed, directing my senses towards the place that housed my mate. Scanning the little apartment, I felt her and my son sleeping. Heavy paws of a Forest Moon warrior moved
around the outside of the house.
The person rushing after the strange female who had my beta’s attention suddenly came into view. It was a human female. Older. That had to be her mother.
She called out,
“Ti cheri.”
Her voice was laced with fear and alarm as she ran after the younger woman. The night was too cold for humans. These two were in danger of getting hypothermia. Both were in their night clothes. Though the older woman had a jacket, it was too light for the outdoors this time of the year.
Jake gave a soft whine as the woman caught up with the ill one. She grabbed her by the shoulders, shaking her repeatedly as she cried out,
“Wake up,
ti cheri, please. Oh… tis a full moon. I forgot to make sure your door is locked tight.
And it is so cold…”
She trailed off, tensing as her matured sixth sense registered her audience. The younger female was now half–awake. Her mother hastily removed her jacket and threw it over her shoulders before hugging her tight. She fixed a stare on Jake and I as she smoothed her daughter’s back.

Fear had left her face. A blank expression watched us like she was daring us to attack. The woman knew exactly what we were. But that was a given. Judging from her daughter’s part- wolf gene, she was well–acquainted with our kind.
There was no fear as she stared at the two big werewolves watching her. Dislike was what she felt towards us. A grudge.
With haste, she finished adjusting the jacket over the sleepwalker.
“Wake up!” That command accompanied a hard slap that caused the younger female to jerk. She came wide awake, horror immediately creeping into her face as she realized where she
was.
‘C’mon, Jake,‘ I whispered.
The older woman began pulling the girl away, determined to make sure she didn’t spot us.
Good.
Minutes later, I’d arrived at Sara’s and finished checking on her and my son. Then I looked around to make sure no wolves were near the house. The guards assured me that all was fine and they were alert.
Once satisfied that they were safe, Jake and I crossed the street to head straight to the cell where the guest was being held.
As we came near the nondescript building, my beta’s silence prompted me to speak.
“You alright?”
“Sure? Why wouldn’t I be?”
There was an edge in his voice. The question irritated him. Which was confirmation that he was, in fact, not alright.
“Jake, it’s me, your best friend. It’s okay to be startled by something you don’t understand. Especially one as weird as that.”
He frowned. Like he didn’t know what I was talking about.
“Werewolves don’t get that type of illness,” I explained.
“Humans do. And I was shocked too. It’s my first seeing one with the illness. I’m not as shocked as you though.”
