For a brief moment, I pictured him living here. With Nick’s declaration about him inheriting the Reign empire, I knew that this was my child’s future home.
Yes, we would continue to have joint custody. But soon, Alex would come to think of this place as another home. Like he was quick to do with the resort.
I imagined him spending the rest of his childhood here. It was not a strange picture. As he jumped down from the tree branch, he walked hesitantly to meet Avery. His eyes moved to his father, who was staring at me and not them.
I recalled how Nick had flipped when Alex called the sergeant uncle. How ironic. Did he know then? Well, I was about to find out.
Avery said something to my son and roughened his hair affectionately. Then he gave me one last look as he kept on walking.
The Luna watched from the side entrance. So did Aylin.
I knew why the latter came back outside. It was to take a good look at Nick’s son. But she kept her eyes on Avery as he made his way out. Maybe for the Luna’s benefit.
Her reaction when she first laid eyes on Alex wasn’t lost to me. She made no effort to hide
the shock and wonder.
Avery soon disappeared from sight. I directed my focus to Nick. He began to approach as I
rose from the bench. When we stood a few feet apart, he spoke first.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“I was afraid you’d want to leave with the sergeant,” he replied.
“Don’t you mean your brother? You were afraid I’d want to leave with your brother,” I corrected. “When were you going to tell me? You know what? Never mind. It’s not important.
We were NOT close. I did not intend to become his female. So I had no right to be mad at him. about this. The Alpha didn’t owe me details about his family life.
“I mind, Sara. But you can’t hold this against me on top of everything. It’s not fair, I found out mere hours ago. I’m still having trouble coming to terms with it myself. He, on the other hand, he’d known for a while now. Why did he keep it from you?”
A buzzing sound interrupted us. It was the phone in his hand. He looked at it and let out a

frustrated breath.
“It’s the doctor,” he said.
The call I was waiting for.

He took it and listened, nodding, and speaking softly while I waited.
“Thank you, doctor,” he said after a moment and hung up.
“You’re alright. But he’d like you to come in and get properly checked.”
“I feel fine, Nick,” I replied. “And I don’t hold it against you. But there’s no reason to wait around here, anymore. I should get back to town. About Alex…”
“He’s safe here. He’s with me. Like I told you, I’ll just show him around. He’ll be in school tomorrow morning,” he said. “You can pick him up afterwards, according to our schedule.”
I nodded. “Okay.”
“Sara.”
When he moved closer, I stepped back. I needed distance from him. I needed to get away from here to think clearly about everything.
“Is it okay for pack members to see him?”
“It’s okay for you and me. That’s all that matters. Some would get upset, but they can’t do anything about it. They’re not Alpha. I am. No one tells me how to run my home. I don’t want you to worry, okay,” he said.
“Also, just a heads up. Reporters may take photos of me and him, so you’ll probably see us on
TV or the internet.”
Wow, he was truly ready to go public with his son, huh.
“Thanks for telling me,” I said.
“Hayes will get you back to town. Lindsey and her partner will stay close to keep you safe.”
I nodded and was about to walk away when he asked,
“Can I see you tomorrow? Please…”
“I’ll be busy, Nick. And we have nothing else to talk about. We’ll see Monday. On the day of the full moon,”
