“Hi. Good morning,” I greeted awkwardly.
“Good morning.” Silence. We were both waiting for the other to speak.
“Where are you?” I asked him.
“In Orphic. I had to quickly come here to… ah… see someone.”
“Lindsey is keeping me in your room!”
“Yeah. It’s temporary, I promise. I need you to stay there till I get back. I have to hang up now, but we’ll see soon.”
The phone beeped, indicating that he had hung up.
Was I still a secret? I brushed the ugly thought aside. It didn’t matter because the bond was temporary. By this time next week, his mark would begin to fade from my neck following the rejection. I immediately discarded that hurtful line of thought and dialled my father’s number.
“Hey, dad.”
“Sara? My darling. Where are you? How are you? They must’ve taken your phone. I tried to call you. The Luna sent a note,” he said.
There was no malice in his voice. Only relief and concern. I hope it stayed that way.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were fated?”
“Because I was ashamed, dad. I was bonded to a werewolf that didn’t want me,” I replied.
“Look, he’s a selfish, arrogant… bastard, and I still hate him! But I’m starting to think he let you go for the same reason the Luna kidnapped you yesterday.”
“I don’t understand any of that.”
“What did she say before they took you away?” He asked.
“That I belong to the Reign.”
It was still hard to decipher the true meaning of those words, so I waited for my dad to do it.
“When you work in the household of the first family, you hear tales. An omega fated to the alpha heir? Or even the beta? That’s like a kitten fated to a tiger. Now I said kitten cuz that’s the only thing I can think of. In truth, the kitten has a far better fate. Things could’ve turned out much worse if you two had gone public back as his mate.” He breathed deeply.

“I’m so thankful that you didn’t. But this would be over soon, right? He’s Alpha now and he did set you free four years ago, yes?”
“Y–yeah. He did. But there was a situation and-”
“Oh Goddess,” my dad breathed. “Sara, tell me you’re no longer fated to him. He just needs to explain that to the Mooners and release you.”
Now how did I explain the horny poison?
“Something happened to me yesterday, daddy. But don’t worry, I’ll be home soon.”
“How soon?”
“Today.”
“Okay, that’s good. That’s a good sign.”
“I’ll call you if anything changes. Alex is in school, right? Did you pick him up yourself yesterday or sent the sergeant?”
“Actually, the beta beat us to it. He called the school, then sent the nanny. With the warriors, of course. They dropped him off here at 4:30. Also, the sergeant said he was coming after you. I haven’t been able to reach him since then.”
“Dad, you told Avery?”
“He knew! The Luna had a chat with him.”
I flopped on the couch, burying my face in my hand. What do I say to the sergeant? It was impossible for us to keep seeing each other now. But he deserved an explanation, at least,
didn’t he?
I hoped he didn’t mean it about coming after me. To fly all the way out here? That was suicidal. A warrior would harm him before he got the chance to ask about me.
“Please text his number to this phone, dad,” I said.
My dad breathed as his tone grew hard and low.
“Will do. Alex’s father just showed up. I’ll call you back.”
He hung up before I could say anything else. What was Nick doing at my dad’s?
I sat wondering, staring at the phone and biting my nails when another knock sounded on the door.

The Luna walked in with Lindsey. Out of habit, I stood up as a sign of respect, but quickly stopped myself from giving the customary bow.
