I hit the send button.
As I kept my eyes locked on the screen, I hoped against hope that she would refute my comment about dating the sergeant. Maybe she would say they’re not serious. Or he’s just a friend. It was a silly wish, but I couldn’t help it.
“Alpha?” My beta tapped the desk. “File!”
“The chief just left, Jake. That’s why I haven’t looked at it.
But you know what, I wanna capture that sergeant and throw him in the dungeon. Why can’t I just kill him and hide the body? Sara would never know, and it would be so much easier. Were you able to find his former pack? I could sell him back to them as a prisoner.”
My eyes were on my phone as I spoke. The seconds slowly ticked into one minute as I waited for Sara’s reply.
I let out a slow breath to unclench. Another few seconds passed before her reply came dropped.
Jake was speaking now, but I didn’t know what he was saying.
“Please, get your mother to stop stalking me or my child. And what you did to me last night? Don’t ever do that again!”
Her dismissive tone made me scoff. We weren’t done with the texting. And what did she mean by what I did? She participated in that kiss. She was ready for my mark before her dad appeared with that damn bowl of ice water.
“Nick!” Jake called firmly,
“Just a sec.” I began typing really fast because my beta had grown impatient.
“There’s my sweet Sara. It gladdens my heart that you still know how to be courteous to your Mate and Alpha. I’ll see what I can do about my mom’s guard because you said please. As for last night, feel free to keep pretending you hate it.”
Her reply was swift once again, causing a flutter in my heart. She sent a yawn emoji followed by the text:
“Alpha Nick, head of Reigns Group, don’t you have better things to do?”

“Reese Hawke!” Jake said firmly.
The second name forced my eyes from I Sara’s words to my
beta.

“Who?” I asked him.
“The half–blood’s father,” he replied. “He’s the human between the parents. Name’s Reese Hawke. Worked in Reign’s corporation some twenty–five years ago. Was your mother’s chauffeur after you were born.”
I put my cell phone down gently and reached for the file in front of me. Most half–bloods had
human mothers, not fathers.
“Where is this Reese Hawke? Let me guess. Dead. Murdered by a wolf,” I drawled.
That was common in this part of the world. A werewolf probably had their eyes on his poor mama before she got pregnant for the unfortunate human.
Jake watched me intently with a strange look in his eyes.
“What?”
“Your mother might know his roots. She’s been keeping an eye on him. Awfully interested in the male. There has to be more to her interest than the fact that he’s Sara’s… friend,” he said.
“Or there isn’t. My mother is obsessive,” I mumbled.
“Yeah. Reminds me of a certain person.” His tone was sarcastic.
“What the f*ck am I supposed to do with his dead human father? I still don’t know what he did before coming here. I want to know the whore that gave birth to him. I wanna know his werewolf bloodline.”
I noticed that my mood had lifted for some reason. My gaze shifted to the phone again and I decided I had to reply Sara’s last text soon enough. I couldn’t have her thinking that getting
rid of me was easy,
“Your mother-”
“Don’t give her any more ideas, Jake,” I cut him off. “She and the chief are already making plans to send them both to Lily. Eight thousand miles from here!”
He nodded. My eyes were on the report as I scanned further to check for any other important info that my beta hadn’t mentioned.
“The Luna is determined to keep the sergeant and Sara together,” I said to Jake.

“She’s our only lead if you want to know about his mother, Nick,” he said gently. “Every search on his werewolf side has led to a dead end. I’d say do to him what Elise is trying to do to Sara. Pay and threaten him to stay far away.”
“I wanna do the second part, but much more than threaten him. I want to force him to stay far away. That’s why I want to know where he fell out of. I can make them drag him back. At least, I won’t have to lie to Sara when I tell her I didn’t kill him.”
“You could ask the chief too. He was a young intern at Reigns at that time. He’ll know that name Hawke for sure. He’s also close to your family.”
“But he’s already working with the Luna to make sure Sara stays with the little shit,” I snapped.
“They’re the only leads for now,” Jake argued.
As I grabbed my phone to start typing a reply, all I could say was,
“Something must be done about that male!”
