“Yeah, I did,” he replied gently. The line was silent again before I spoke. “But it’s gone as soon

“Just vanished.”

I arrived at the station some time later. Avery was emerging from the building, wearing a cast.

He offered a friendly smile as I approached.

“You wouldn’t take my calls,” I began.

“I lost my phone last night at the bar. Leonard returned it to me this morning. I haven’t even turned it on yet.”

He pulled it out of his pocket with his good hand.

“How’s your hand?”

“Healing nicely. I’m like you, remember?”

And I was glad that he was. The sound of his bone breaking last night still gave me chills. If he were 100% human, he would need much more than a cast to fix that.

“I’m so sorry, Avery. I don’t know why he did that.

“I have an idea why he did it, but that’s not important. No need to be sorry. You didn’t do anything wrong, Sara,” he said, moving closer to brush soft fingers on my cheek.

“It was because of me.”

“No! It’s because of him. Do you know we have a new chief of police? When the former one was transferred I should’ve known Forest Moon’s Chief Gamma was involved,” he said with a bitter laugh.

“I filed a complaint, but I know it’s a waste of time. Everyone said I fell. Can you believe that? Would you be willing to give a witness statement?”

I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out.

“What? You don’t want me to go after him? He attacked me, Sara,” he said.

“No, of course. I didn’t…” I trailed off, unsure how I felt. “You already said it’s a waste of time. And… I don’t want to be popular.”

When he nodded in understanding, I added, “I’m so sorry, Av.”

“No, it’s okay. The fight’s between me and him, anyway. I don’t want you having any more worries than he already caused you,” he replied, running his hand down my arm.

Then he leaned close and dropped a light kiss on my mouth.

I caught myself before recalling the intensity of Nick’s kiss last night.

“I’m not mad at you. I don’t blame you for dating him years ago.”

How I wished I could tell him that what Nick and I had was far from “dating.”

Apart from being the father of my child, I didn’t know what he was to me. Couldn’t tell if he qualified as an ex? He was my mate who hid me from everyone around.

“I’ll head to work now,” I said.

“Can I see you later? After work?” he asked.

I was hesitant because of what happened last night. What if Nick showed up again?

“Okay. Maybe not today,” he quickly added. “I’ll call you later.”

“Okay.”

I got back into the car and started to pull into the road when I noticed the ash sedan parked by the side of the street. Maybe it’s one of Richard’s guys. I didn’t even know why I noticed it.

If it was there for me, Lorenzo would’ve seen it first, wouldn’t he? Maybe I was paranoid.

But glancing at the car as I drove past, I realized the person in it was familiar. He tried look away and lower himself on the seat, but I already saw him. I knew him.

A Forest Moon warrior. He was Mae’s partner, the Luna’s personal gammas.

A car honked behind me, bringing my focus back on the road. But I kept stealing glances on my rearview mirror as I sped on.

Was the Luna also having me followed? Maybe she was spying on Avery and I.
