Chapter 74: Another Victim
Liz
Brady looks very out of it, but he still manages to speak to us. “I know, and it didn’t happen
quite as I envisioned, but I am glad it worked. Please tell me that b***h is dead,” he answers in
a croaky voice. “She is, and Keira and the men that survived are in jail. All we need from you is
to rest and recover,” Zander says, and Brady looks at him with a sad smile.
“I know I don’t deserve this, but I would like to tell you everything. Would you allow me that
chance?” he asks and Zander smiles at him. “Yes, but only when you are better. We can talk
when you are out of the ICU.” “Thanks Zan, the same goes for your Ric, will you give me a
chance to explain?” he asks.
We all look at Ricardo and he nods. “I will, but it better be damn good,” he answers with a
slight smile. “I am so sorry for everything, please tell me you and the baby are okay,” Brady
says, looking at me. “We are both perfectly fine. Now listen to the boys and get some rest, so
you can heal and come home,” I said, hoping to ease his mind.
He gave me the brightest smile he could muster, before his eyes started to droop again.”
That’s our queue, get some rest, Brady. We will be back,” Robyn says, and he nods at her. They
have struck up quite a friendship and I love it. Not many people appreciate Robyn’s
personality, but everyone in our circle loves her. Why wouldn’t they? She is the best bestie l
could ask for and an awesome person.
Brady closes his eyes, and we all leave when he is asleep. We go back to Zander’s room, while
Robyn and Ricardo head to Toby’s room before they go home. Wayne comes by to change
Zander’s dressing, and gives him the clear to leave. I think he was just getting tired of Zander’s
nagging.
The driver came to get us and when we finally got home, the place was as good as new. Perez really moves quickly. There is no sign that this place was a battleground. I checked the walls, and even the bullet holes were plastered. The house still had that new painted smell. Even the closet door that hides the panic room was fixed.
I am honestly grateful for this, we don’t need any more reminders. We headed straight upstairs, and I helped Zander to bathe. We need to keep the dressing clean and dry until his next check–up. When he is done and in bed, I go in search of food. I found two plates of food
on the kitchen island with a note.
‘Just re–heat, I made it myself. Don’t look in the trash. Love you bestie, ‘I chuckle as I read it

and go straight to the bin and look inside. Yip, takeout boxes. I don’t know how she survived all these years without me. She can’t cook to save her life, but she can order take out like a
pro.
I take the lids off and smile. Lamb curry, and I know exactly where she bought it, so.I know it’s good. I reheat our food, and grab two bottles of water and two sodas and take the tray upstairs. Zander was scrolling on his phone when I come back into the room.
“That smells good, what is it?” Zander asks, sitting up. “Robyn made it,” “When you say made, you mean she put it on the plates, don’t you?” Zander answers and I chuckle. “It’s the thought that counts,” “True, you should really give her lessons. I still remember that pasta she made and forced me to eat,” Zander says with a shiver, and I burst out laughing.
“She has gotten better since then, but just the basics. I am sure Ricardo will teach her.” I say as I take my first bite. It’s just as flavorful and succulent as I remember. We enjoyed our dinner and Zander drank his antibiotics before we both snuggled up into bed. We both fall asleep immediately, and it feels so good being in our own bed again.
The next morning, we slept in a bit, but we had our appointment with Dr. Nox, so we got up and were ready by 10am. The drive to her office was short, and for the first time in a long time, we could drive ourselves. Obviously, we took my car. Zander can protest all he wants, but I know Zee won him over. Soon he will team Rover all the way.
“Good morning, it is a pleasure to finally meet you. Wayne has already filled me in, so I am aware of the incident at your home. I would really like to do your examination first to make sure that everything is okay.” Dr. Nox says, when we enter her office.
“That sounds brilliant Dr. Nox, and we are both pleased to meet you. You are highly recommended by Wayne, so I am all yours,” I say, and she chuckles, while Zander shakes her hand. “He is a brilliant and sweet man. Come lay down for me, let’s see how your little one is doing,” she says, and I get up onto the bed.
After she has done a bit of prodding on my belly, she does an ultrasound. She does some measurements before she shows us the baby. “The baby is growing perfectly, and the heartbeat is strong. Wayne was out by 2 days, but everything else was fine. Your due date is the 26th of December, but I should warn you that babies do come on their own timetable. Would you like to know the s*x of the baby?”
“Yes please doctor, I just need you to confirm to my Liz, that we are having a son.” Zander answers first and I giggle. “Well, I don’t know the stakes of your little tiff, but you are right, Mr. Caine. You are having a boy,” Dr, Nox says with a chuckle. Zander fist pumps the air, and I just

roll my eyes at him and chuckle. When he is done with his celebration, he bends down and
kisses me.
Dr. Knox gave me some more vitamins and explained what we should expect, before she sent us on our way. I will have to come see her every month, which I really don’t mind. Zander and I left her office with huge smiles and happy hearts. As long as this baby is okay, so am I.
I never imagined I could love this baby so much already, and I haven’t even met him yet.
Zander and I went to the park for a bit, and sat on my favorite bench. According to security,
there was no sign of Mary at all. I am beginning to wonder if she was ever real.
But surely she was. I could not have imagined her giving me those numbers. I even have her
note as proof. Chris is still trying to track her down too. But there are thousands of Mary’s in
the city, and I don’t even know her last name, or if she even lives here.
We had lunch at my favorite diner, before we headed home. When we got there, we were happy
to see that Rosa was back. She was waiting for us with her son, Dom. After an emotional
reunion, Zander and I shared our news with them. Rosa was a crying mess, so happy and
excited. It warmed my heart to see how much she loved Zander.
The guys left to chat, while I showed Rosa the pictures of the ultrasound. She was very sad and worried about Brady, but happy that he came back to us. Before she went home, she and
Dom went to visit Brady in the hospital. It seems like everything is going back to normal in our
lives, and it feels really good.
It’s been a week and Brady is finally well enough to leave the ICU. He had a minor setback, so they had to operate again. He is much better now, and we can finally see him without the glass. He also has more strength to hold longer conversations. We are with him now, because
he asked to see Zander.
I wanted to give them some privacy, but Zander didn’t want me to leave. “It all started when I was 15 years old. My foster dad gave me a letter and said that my real dad sent it. As you know, my foster dad wasn’t abusive, but he didn’t show me any emotion either.
So, as you can imagine, when I read that first letter, I was so happy that there was someone out there that really wanted me. I would receive a letter a few times a year, until I turned 18. Then I met David for the first time. He wasn’t exactly warm and fuzzy, but it was a step up
from my foster dad.
He told me that he needed me to help the family and that he would be in touch. I hadn’t seen him for years, but he still sent letters. Then one day, he came to the place I was working and told me that I had to befriend Ricardo. He wouldn’t give me information. All he said was that I

needed to make sure that we became friends and that he trusted me.
I already knew Ricardo. I had seen him around the neighborhood and I always thought he was
a cool guy. So, I jumped at the chance to help David, and to get to know Ricardo. Things were.
going great, and I didn’t hear from David for a while. Until that day, Ricardo took the job from
you.
I was supposed to ensure that the hired men got to your parents, but I just couldn’t do it. By then, I had gotten to know your parents, and you and I couldn’t understand why David would
want to harm them. Because I failed, I was left out of any future planning.
Then one day, he came to me and told me the story of my grandfather and what your parents
did to him,” Brady says, looking down. “You do know that isn’t really how things went down,
don’t you?” Zander asks him. “I didn’t then, I believed him. But even then, I still struggled to
believe that your parents were capable of that.
Then one day, my foster dad asked me to go with him out of town, so I did. Do you remember
that? It was the exact weekend that your parents died. They sent me away so that I didn’t
interfere. When Ric called me to tell me the news, I confronted my foster dad, and he admitted
the truth to me.
I was livid and hurt. I asked David to stop his madness, but he told me it was out of his hands.
I wanted to come clean with you and Ric, but David stopped me. That is when I first found out who Martha really was. She approached me and made me a deal I couldn’t refuse.
Either I help them, or they wipe out Ricardo’s entire family. At first, I thought she was bluffing,
so I refused. A day later, Ricardo’s sister was hit by that car.” “I remember that, even with
Chris’s help, we couldn’t find the driver of the vehicle. Luckily, she was okay,” Zander says. Sounds to me like Brady was a victim too. How could they do that to their own blood? Martha
really was a vile b***h.
