Chapter 73: He Is Awake

We left Toby’s room with smiling faces. We wanted to give them some privacy and check on Brady. Doc said he was out of surgery, but he was still in the ICU. We could see him through the glass, but we weren’t allowed inside. They can’t risk him picking up an infection.
When we get there, we find Ricardo and Robyn sitting on chairs outside his door. She runs to
me when she sees me and engulfs me in a hug. “I am so glad you two are okay. I was worried
sick,” she says with teary eyes. “I am okay, Zander still needs to rest, but the baby and I are
both okay,” I assure her.
“Why are you worried about her? This warrior princess took Keira down with kitchen knives. It was truly a sight,” Zander tells Robyn and she chuckles. “That’s my girl! We wouldn’t be
besties if you didn’t have some crazy in you.” “It’s nothing like what you had planned for
Martha, but I channeled my inner Robyn,” I say, and we all laugh.
“I am really glad you are both okay and that this is finally over. Now we just need him to wake up, so we can all move on with our lives,” Robyn says, nodding towards Brady’s sleeping form. “How is he? What did they say? Will he make a full recovery?” I ask.
“They are keeping him sedated for the next 24 hours. They will know more when they wake him. The bullet nicked his heart, and luckily it was a small tear. The membranes around his heart contained most of the bleeding. They did a repair, but it was touch and go, and they
almost lost him.
All we can do now is wait and pray he makes it through. The doctor said that he was very lucky. If that bullet moved just an inch, he would have bled to death before the paramedics arrived,” Ricardo says, and I can see the emotion in his eyes. I think I am right, and these boys will forgive Brady.
“We just came from Toby’s room, and he is awake and well. It’s not really our place to say, but you already know anyway. Chris and Toby finally told each other how they felt,” I say and both Robyn and Ricardo smile. “It’s about damn time,” Robyn says, while Ricardo pulls her into his arms and kisses her forehead. They are so cute.
“Now, Brady needs to make it out of this so that we can find him someone too,” Zander says with a sad smile. “Are you going to forgive him?” Ricardo asks Zander. “I want to talk to him first. He did save my life, and I owe it to him to listen to his side. But I do need to know about my parents,” he answers, and we all nod and stay quiet, lost in our own thoughts.

Chapter 73: He Is Awake
Zander may be hurt, but he loves Brady. I just pray Brady had nothing to do with his parents‘ death. I don’t think Zander can forgive that. We sat and chatted for a while, until Wayne came and forced us to leave. Zander is still supposed to be resting, so we head back to his room.
I helped him take the robe off so he could get into bed. He scoots over for me, so I take off my shoes and get in next to him and rest my head on his chest. I am so exhausted, but I am happy this is over.
I woke to Zander drawing circles over my belly and I smiled. “Why aren’t you sleeping?” I
asked, but didn’t open my eyes. “I am just saying good morning to my son.” He answered, and
I opened my eyes and looked at him. He is smirking and clearly feeling better.
“Shouldn’t you be resting?” “Resting yes, not sleeping. I slept enough, and I miss my Liz.” he
says and pinches my n****e. “Nope, not happening. We are in a hospital room, and you got shot a few hours ago. You can wait until you are fully healed, and we are at home,” I say,
sitting up.
“Are you serious?” he asked me. “Are you pouting?” I retorted. “I have every right to pout, when
you don’t want to give me what I want,” he says and actually pouts again. “Are you sure you
aren’t the pregnant one with hormones? You always seem to be horny,” I say and chuckle.
“You should know by now, my Liz. I always want you.” “You can want all you like, but the
answer is no. Now is not the time.” I answer, and he gasps dramatically, and I burst out
laughing. “As much as I would like to make love to you now, I was just kidding. I don’t want to
give Wayne or the nurses a show. Only I can see you come,” Zander whispers the last part, and leans down and bites my n****e through my t–shirt, making me giggle.
“You do love to tease me, don’t you?” I ask and he nods. “You are so easy to tease.” he says and kisses me. “Do you think they’ll let me go home today?” “If you rest like they told you to,! don’t see why not.” I answer. “Good, I really hate hospitals,” he answers. I know he does, and
it’s a miracle that he has been so calm.
Wayne came to check on Zander when he started his new shift. That man barely had six hours of sleep, and he was at it again. He wanted to see to the guys himself. When he is done, they bring us food. After we have eaten, agent Perez comes to speak to us. I know he has been busy, and he handled everything while we were here.
Commander Carlson and Delia Sauls, the District Attorney, came with him. There will be no
charges pressed against Zander for the fatal shooting of Martha. It was done in self–defense
and agent Perez, as well as everyone else, was in danger. I don’t think Zander was worried at
all, he knows the law.

They went over everything they had on Martha and her cartel. Alvaro had already given them
everything he had, including Martha’s confession that Clara recorded, the video of Clara,
David’s confession he gave the FBI, and statements from Horis and Keira. Turns out that there
was a lot more on that SD card than we thought.
Zander just handed it over to Perez. I think he was too overwhelmed with guilt at the time. He
still feels responsible for Clara and her son’s death, because they died at the hands of his
family’s enemies. Even I bear that same guilt, because I just added to everything when I came
back into Zander’s life.
There was also another video of David and Martha making plans to integrate David’s son into
the mission. But it seems Clara didn’t know it was Brady, because she never mentioned him
by name. We aren’t sure how much Brady knows either. We have to wait for him to wake up,
and they are only waking him in a few hours.
There was also a detailed statement she wrote that explains everything she did for them, and
everything she overheard, including dates and times. She was very thorough. I can see that
she couldn’t wait to get free of them and take them down. It’s just sad that she doesn’t get to
see justice served. Especially after Martha had her son killed.
Alvaro also let us know how Martha knew about the double cross. One of Rebel’s men spilled
the whole plan to Martha. That is why she hired extra men and went along with the plan to get revenge on the bikers. Rebel’s guy got a payout of 100k for it.
But he won’t get to spend it though, because he seems to have disappeared without a trace.
All Rebel said was, ‘family first‘ and ‘there is no room for traitors‘. We can all read between the lines, and I am sure his body will never be found. I guess I understand, he put everyone’s lives at risk, including his club members.
The DA also reminded me that Elaine’s trial is in five days. They had to postpone all the trials and sentencing after Martha had the others killed. Tiffany needs to be sentenced, but she is still in the medical unit. They don’t even know how long she will survive. Her recovery is slow, and I doubt she will be someone’s first choice to be a donor recipient.
Now that Elaine is fully healed, her trial will start. So I feel happy that justice will be served all around. Maybe now Zander and I can live our lives in peace and I can get back to finding Mary. I should also get my bar exam results before the end of this month. It normally takes three months, so I have two more weeks to wait to see if I can finally call myself a lawyer.
“What’s on your mind, love?” Zander asks me, breaking me out of my thoughts. Our guests just left, so it’s just the two of us, lying on his hospital bed. “I was just thinking about

everything that happened. And in two more weeks I will get my results,” I say, smiling.
“Soon you will be Elizabeth Caine, attorney at law.” “I will still be Elizabeth Ferley for a few months,” I answer and chuckle. “I was thinking we should change the date of the wedding. What if you go into labor early, and we don’t get to make it down the aisle before the baby is born?” Zander says.
“I thought about that too. I also don’t want to waddle down the aisle,” I say, and he chuckles. ”
You know I will carry you if I have to.” “I don’t think your back can manage the weight. I think we should wait to hear what Dr. Nox says. We are seeing her tomorrow anyway. If she
confirms the date, then we will have the wedding sooner,” I say, “Whatever you say, Mrs. Caine.
he answers and kisses me.

“Sorry for interrupting,” Ricardo says from the door, so we break our kiss. “Are you?” Zander
asks with one eyebrow raised. “Maybe,” he answers, and we all chuckle. “They are about to
wake Brady now. We can’t question him yet, but we are allowed to see him for a bit. We can
speak to him through the intercom. He will have to stay in the ICU until he is out of danger,”
Ricardo says, and we both get up.
We followed Ricardo back to the ICU ward and to Brady’s room. We watch through the glass,
until we see him try to open his eyes. When he is fully awake, the doctor asks him questions
to see if he remembers why he is there. He answers all the questions, and he looks weak, but
he seems to be okay.
When the doctor is done examining him, he shows him that we are all outside. He looks at all
of us and smiles. “Hey brother, you gave us all quite a scare trying to play hero, Ricardo says.
Zander looks at me and I squeeze his hand. I know he wishes things were different, but I hope
he will give him a chance.
