Chapter 53: Clara’s Confession

Why am I not surprised? I should’ve known to check into Clara. She and David are the only two I didn’t have a hand in hiring. They were already working for my parents, and then Rosa, who has been with us since before I was born. Chris calls me back and I answer immediately.
“Hey Zander, Clara has been receiving a few large deposits of 100K each since January. The money is coming from a shell account and Tim is already trying to find the real source. I am sorry buddy, but everything points to her being the mole. The strange thing is that she never used any of the money, it’s all still there.” he says.

“That is strange. Do some more digging. Go back to before my parents‘ death. Thank you, Chris, keep me posted please.” I said and hung up. “Damn it.” I say and Liz looked at me. Ricardo, please go through her things for any information we could use. The vehicle she is using is her own, so I can’t track it.” I say and he nods and leaves.
“Are you sure Clara has been selling information?” Rosa asks. “I am sorry Rosa, but yes.” I say. “Do you think she has been going behind your back since the beginning?” Rosa asks. “I really don’t know. Information only started to leak when we came to live here. I don’t know if she was selling information about my parents too. Chris is looking into her now.” I say and Rosa nods,
but she looks very sad.
“Why don’t you go to bed and get some rest? There is nothing you can do tonight, Liz says, and Rosa nods and hugs her, before she leaves. Liz puts her arms around my waist and rests her head on my chest. “I am sorry Zander. I really liked her.” Liz says softly.
“I should apologize, she was on my payroll, and you nearly got hurt again because of her.” I said. “You couldn’t have known Zander. She has been working here for years. Besides, we don’t know the full story yet.” She says as she lifts her head to look at me. “Still, I should’ve thought
of having all the staff checked before we came to stay here.” I say.
She puts her head back down on my chest and holds me tightly. “It’s not your fault Zander, please don’t let what she did turn you against the others.” She says and I nod. “I won’t, as long as they are still loyal.” I say and she nods. We just stand like that in our embrace, in the middle of the kitchen, lost in our own thoughts.
Ricardo comes walking in a few minutes later with a note and hands it to me. “She is gone, Zander. Most of her belongings are gone, and she left this under her pillow for you. Footage around the time she left shows her packing a few suitcases in the boot of her car.” Ricardo

I opened the note and read it. ‘Zander, I am sorry. I had my reasons, and it was never about the
money. But there are others around you that have more sinister reasons. Be careful who you trust. Please forgive me. Clara, “Why couldn’t she just f*****g tell me? If she is so sorry, then
she could’ve just told me the truth.” I said in frustration.
Liz reads the note and frowns. “We need to find out what she means,” she says. “I will speak
to Chris. Why don’t the two of you get some rest? It’s been a long day for you, Liz, and you
need to be well rested for tomorrow’s exam.” Ricardo says and Liz smiles and nods. “Thanks
man,” I say and he nods. I took Liz’s hand and led her to our room. Another f****d up day
“I feel like we should go away for a bit,” I say as we both get into the shower. “We can’t run
away from our problems, even though I really agree with you.” Liz says. “Then let’s agree to go
on a vacation as soon as Martha is caught. Just you and me. Far away from traitors and
murderous bitches,” I said, and she chuckled.
“That sounds great. I really hope we can figure all this out soon. I don’t like that we have to
watch our backs in our own home,” Liz says, and I can’t help but smile. “I like that you think of
this as our home. I was hoping we could stay here when we get married,” I said, and she
smiled.
“You already know I love this house and wherever you are is my home,” she says. I pull her into
my arms and kiss her, just because I can and she is mine. When we break the kiss, I turn her
around to wash her back. I really want to bury myself inside her after the f****d–up day we
had. But she needs to be well rested for tomorrow’s portion of the exam.
When we are done in the shower, we both get into bed. I pull her into my arms and hold her
close, until she falls asleep. I couldn’t sleep, I had too many things running through my mind. I slowly got out of bed, so I didn’t wake Liz. I give her my pillow and I smile when I see she is
holding it and snuggles closer to my side.
I took my phone and walked out of the room, so I didn’t wake her. I read the message I got from Chris and called him back. “Hey man, you still awake?” I asked when he answered.”
Yeah, I have been busy. I have some good news for you though,” he says.
“Please share, I need something to cheer me up.” I said. “I know exactly where Clara is heading, and I am on my way there to intercept her now. We need answers, and so far, all the other staff check out. I found no links to Martha or the cartel and no extra money going
through their accounts.
I also noticed that you pay them pretty well. Seeing as though I am basically a full–time

employee now, I hope I will be getting a raise too.” Chris says and I chuckle. “You already bill me a small fortune every month, but you are worth every penny.” I say. “Aww, I knew you loved me,” Chris says chucking.
“I will call you back soon, Zander. I need to go. I am nearing the place now. Perez is on his way
too.” Chris says. “Okay, thanks man, be careful.” I say before I hang up. I head downstairs and
find Ricardo in the kitchen, having some ice–cream. I look at him with one eyebrow raised and
he chuckles.
“I am waiting for Chris to get back to me, and I was in the mood for something sweet.” He
says, and I chuckle and grab me some ice–cream too. I might as well join him, I can’t sleep,
and I am waiting for word from Chris too. “How are things going with you and Robyn?” I asked
and he smiled.
“It’s going great. We are taking it slow, and I have to admit, I really like her.” He says and I
smile. “I am glad, she really is great. I shouldn’t have lost touch with her back then. I just
couldn’t stand being around her knowing that Liz would be there too, with Kyle. But I am glad I
reconnected with her. She led me straight to Liz again. She is my very own cupid,” I said, and
he smiled.
“I am happy about that too, for you and Liz, but mostly for me,” he says, and we both chuckle. I
was just about to tease him about being whipped, when my phone rang. “Hey Chris, Ricardo is
with me.” I said when I answered the phone. I put it on speaker, so Ricardo could also listen in.
“Clara is dead, Zander. Someone shot her and left her body in her car. Her belongings have
been thrown everywhere, but we have her phone. It was hidden under her seat. Agent Perez is
already here. He arrived before me and found her body. There is a video file on her phone you need to see. I will forward it to you now.” Chris says.
“f**k! I was pissed, but I never wanted her to die.” I said. “I know, and she was in deeper than
you know. Watch the video, then you will understand. I am sorry man, she seems to be a victim in this whole thing. She should’ve come to you for help, but she dug a deeper hole for
herself by doing Martha’s bidding the first time. We have two possible locations for Martha,
thanks to her. We are heading there soon. I will call you when I have news. Don’t show it to Liz
yet, she needs a clear mind for her exam tomorrow.” Chris says.
“She is sleeping anyway. I won’t show her just yet. Keep us updated, Ricardo and I will watch
the video together.” I said and hung up. A few seconds later, I got the video and I played it. It looks like it was taken today, because her luggage is in the background, and she was still in her room here at the house. “My name is Clara Jansen. I work as a maid for Mr. Zander Caine, the owner of Caine and associates.

Chapter 53: Clara’s Confession
If anything happens to me, please show this video to him as well as Agent Alvaro Perez in the white–collar division of the FBI. More than two years ago, I was approached by a family friend of the Caine family, named Martha Silverman. She asked me to spy on Rhea and Victor Caine,
Zander’s parents. I refused point–blank and that’s when things got bad for me.
I have a son, named Thadeus Reed. Not many people know about him, because he was born
when I was only 16 years old. My mother raised him as her own, so that I could live a normal
life. Martha threatened me with the life of my son. I didn’t believe her at first, because he is in
my home country and safe with my mother. She showed me video footage of my son being
force–fed drugs by one of her people.
I know I should’ve called the authorities or asked for help, but my first instinct was to protect
my son. I did everything Martha asked, and she agreed to let him go. By then, weeks had
passed, and my son was already hooked on the drugs they gave him. Martha started to
demand I do more sinister things, and when I refused, my son was taken again.
After Martha had Victor and Rhea killed, she left me alone. My son was set free and sent to a
rehabilitation center. For more than a year, he was drug free, and he started to rebuild his life.
Martha stopped asking me for information and I thought I was free, but I was wrong.” Clara
says and wipes her tears that are already spilling.
Why didn’t she just go to my parents and ask for help or me? We would’ve helped her in a
heartbeat. My parents would still be alive if she had just asked for help.
