I woke up in Zander’s arms and smiled. This is where I always wanted to be. I feel well rested
and not as groggy as I did when I first woke up. I lie and watch him sleep, but I don’t want to
wake him. He must be exhausted for him to sleep this late.
I was so shocked when I heard that Martha was actually the leader of the cartel. She seems
too snobbish to be in a cartel. But I suppose it’s all an act she perfected over the years. It
seemed like she was running a long con. But to what end? What does she want with Zander?
And why kill his parents?

He starts to stir, so I lean forward and kiss him, and he smiles before he opens his eyes.
Morning my Zander,” I say and he chuckles. “Morning my Liz. How are you feeling today?” he
asks me. “Well rested and perfectly fine,” I say. “I am glad. I hate that you were in danger again,” he said.
“No one expected that to happen, Zander. If anything, you should be mad at me for insisting
on going there. I really believed it was Mary and you know how much finding her means to me.
She changed my luck when I was down and out. I would like to thank and help her,” I said, and
he nodded.
“I understand, and I can never be mad at you, Liz. I know how much she means to you. I love
that you have a kind heart and always look for the good in people, but you have to be more careful. There are too many people after us now. No matter what happens, your safety comes first,” he says.
“The same goes for your safety. I can’t ever lose you, Zander. Mary may have changed my luck, but you changed my life. You made me believe in love again and showed me what true love feels like. I promise I will be more careful, and I also need to learn how to defend myself.
I know some basics, but I don’t want to freeze up like I did when Martha grabbed me. I was just so caught off guard, I took too long to react.” I said, and he smiled. “I can help you with that. Instead of spinning today, I can teach you how to defend yourself and how to get out of an attackers‘ hold.” He says.
“Another hidden talent?” I asked. “My parents were very strict when it came to my education. Piano, French, Greek, kick boxing, swimming and tennis lessons made up my youth. I did love it though, and kick boxing came in quite handy.” He says, and I chuckle.

“I can’t picture you in a brawl or fight.” I say. “Drunken college bar fights.” He says laughing.” Please do tell me more,” I say, but he shakes his head. “Another time, let’s get you something. to eat first, you missed dinner. Maybe later we can hit the gym. I have a few calls to make after breakfast.” He says and I nod.
We both get up and get ready to start our day. We aren’t planning on going anywhere until Martha is caught. I wonder if Keira approaching me was part of the plán. Maybe they thought if she befriended me, it would be easier to get to me. I am so glad I didn’t fall for that bullshit.
But Zander is right, I am way too trusting. I can’t keep putting myself in situations where I am at risk. It isn’t fair to Zander. He already has so much on his plate and I always seem to add to it. I need to focus and work towards our happily ever after. Zander deserves the best, and not
this constant uncertainty.
My phone rings while we are eating, and I see its Commander Carlson, so I answer and put it on speaker. “Good morning commander. How are you?” I asked. “I should be asking you that, Liz. Are you feeling better?” he asks me. “Yes, I am much better, thank you.” I say. “I called to check up on you and to let you know that we found Elaine’s boyfriend she had at the time of
your parent’s death.
His name is Gary, and we brought him in for questioning. When I presented the evidence, he came clean and told us the truth. When I questioned him back then, he claimed to know nothing, because they had an on and off type of relationship. He gave a statement now, and
he is also willing to testify.
Your parents‘ death was the reason they broke up. He was too afraid that she would turn on him. All that we need is to find Elaine. She will rot for what she did, Liz, that I can promise you.

Commander Carlson says. “Wow, that is brilliant news. Does he know why she did it?” I
asked.
“Yes, that’s the other reason for my call. Elaine was in love with your dad. They dated in high school, but not for long. Your parents met in college, and they fell in love. Elaine was very jealous and when your parents started doing well for themselves, she became more
obsessive.
She wanted your dad back, but he was happy with your mom. According to him, she tried to

you when you were a baby,” Commander Carlson says. What the actual f**k. “I don’t understand. She killed him because she couldn’t have him? I thought this was about money,” I
said.
I feel completely confused about this whole thing now. “Money played a big role, but mostly

she wanted what your mom had. She wanted your dad and the life your parents were building. She never graduated, she didn’t have a good job, or a husband. All her relationships went to s**t because of her drinking habit, and I would assume, her crazy nature too.
She was jealous of your mother and the fact that your dad chose your mom and not her. Gary said that was all she ever spoke about. Every time she came back from seeing the three of you, she would go on a rant that your mom is living the life she was supposed to have.”
Commander Carlson says.
“So, because she couldn’t have him, no one could?” I asked. “Seems like it. We will know for sure when we capture her.” he says. “Thank you for letting me know. I really appreciate you keeping me in the loop.” I said. “It’s my pleasure. Stay safe Liz.” He says and hangs up.
“That is so messed up,” Zander says and I nod. “I am glad my dad ended up with my mom, even if their love story ended so quickly. They were happy, I know they were.” I say and Zander nods. “Envy and greed push people to do horrible things. I doubt she really loved your dad, she just wanted what your mom had.” He says and I nod.
“Seems like it,” I said. We finish our breakfast, and Zander goes to his office to do some work. I clean up and call Robyn when I am done. I filled her in on what happened. She already knew about Martha, Zander asked Ricardo to fill her in. He wants everyone to be aware in case she
tries to target our friends.
This whole situation is getting out of hand. I just hope we can resolve it soon. When I finished my call with Robyn, I hit the books again, while I waited for Zander. He emerged from his office two hours later, so we headed down to the gym, so he could show me some of his moves.
I had so much fun, and I caught on quickly. I had the basics down. I did take a few classes when I still attended gym. I just need to focus and not panic. That is my main issue. It was hilarious to Zander that I wouldn’t even try to escape him when he captured me.
What can I say? I never wanted to escape his arms. It’s the place I feel safest. But in all seriousness, the first lesson went great. When he feels I am ready and able to defend against an attacker, he will teach me some kick boxing. I am so excited about that. I may never need
it, but it looks like so much fun.
When evening came, Ricardo was on ‘babysitting duty,’ as Robyn calls it. We spent the evening with him playing cards and darts. He is such a cool guy, and I really don’t mind him being
around all the time.
Eight days later…
We haven’t heard any new news about Martha, Elaine or Tiffany. Keira also hasn’t been seen,

so she is probably hiding out with mama bear. Kyle asked to see agent Perez and I laughed my ass off when he told me what happened.
Kyle asked for a lower sentence and agreed to testify against the cartel. He offered up the real cartel boss too. I wish I was in that interrogation room when agent Perez broke the news to
him that we already knew about Martha. Agent Perez also said that he looked horrible.
He was beaten and he had a broken arm. The guard obviously told agent Perez the truth, but
Kyle said he slipped in the showers. A tiny part of me feels sorry for him, but then I have to
remind myself that he brought this on himself. He could’ve gone to the authorities when they
first approached him.
He chose to help them and benefited from it. He deserves whatever punishment he gets. He is
just as responsible for those prison guards‘ deaths too. It was his bright idea to break Tiffany
out of prison. “What has you so deep in thought? Are you nervous about tomorrow?” Zander
asks me, snapping me out of my daze.
“I was just thinking about everything. And I am only a little nervous. I am more excited than
anything.” I say and he smiles. “I am so proud of you, my Liz.” He says and puts his arms
around me. “Thank you, Zander. I am proud of myself too. I have been waiting for this for a long time,” I said.
Tomorrow, I am writing my bar exam. “If I pass, I will officially be, Elizabeth Ferley, attorney at
law.” I say. “I prefer, Elizabeth Caine, attorney at law. We can change my practice to,
Caine–Caine and associates.” He says and.I chuckle. “Caine and associates sounds just fine.” I
say.
Zander’s phone rings just as he kisses me and he frowns. “Who has such horrible timing?” he asks and I giggle. “Why don’t you answer it and find out.” I say, and he chuckles and goes to
get his phone on the nightstand. He answers and his eyes go wide.
“Really? Don’t f**k with me man.” he says. He listens and then he smiles at me. “That is f*****g brilliant news. They really are idiots,” he says and walks back over to me. “Okay, keep me posted.” He says and hangs up. “They have Elaine and Tiffany in custody.” Zander says,
and I can’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.
“That is the best news I have heard in a while.” I said, and Zander nodded his agreement.
