Chapter 47: Mary Called!
Liz
The next few days all went by without a hitch. The only thing that annoyed me a little bit, was that I couldn’t go anywhere alone. I still haven’t heard anything from Mary, and I am beginning to wonder if I ever will. I won’t stop looking though. I even put an ad in the local paper asking
her to contact me. I didn’t mention the lottery or money, in case I get weird calls.
I have been studying again, and I feel good about writing the bar exam. If all goes well, I will
write my exam in exactly 10 days. I am so excited and nervous. But I feel confident that I can
do this. I want something that is just for me. And being a practicing attorney is what I always
wanted to be. My dad was a brilliant attorney and I always wanted to be just like him.
“Are you sure I look okay?” Robyn asked me for the tenth time. “Yes Robyn, you look hot. Stop stressing, you look sexy, and you are going to have a great time.” I said, and she smiled shyly. Hmm, I think she really likes him. Robyn is going on her first official date with Ricardo. She
has been a ball of stress the whole afternoon, rummaging through my closet for the perfect
outfit.
She doesn’t realize that no matter what she wears, she looks beautiful. My bestie is hotter
than she thinks, but I love that she is so modest and not full of herself. She is a
caramel–skinned beauty, with bright green eyes, brown curly hair and a figure to die for. “What
if he doesn’t like the dress?” she asks, snapping me out of my thoughts.
“He will like it, and if he doesn’t, then just take it off. He will love what’s under the dress much more anyway.” I said with a wink. “I like this new Liz. I love that you are so much feistier and more s****1. I have a feeling I will be an aunty very soon, the way you two go at it like bunnies.” She says and we both chuckle.
“Enough about me. Tonight is about you, and the sexy hunk waiting downstairs for you. You better get ready, he has been waiting long enough.” I said, and she giggled. The poor guy has been waiting more than 30 minutes for her to get ready. He looks just as nervous as she does.
Zander and I are both excited and hope things work out between them, but we won’t push
them. They need to get there on their own.
I helped her touch up her make-up and pass her the bag I borrowed her, and pulled her with me out of my room. “I am so nervous,” she whispers, when we reach the stairs. “Don’t be, you are going to have an epic date. Just be yourself, he likes you the way you are. I don’t get it, but each to their own.” I say and she giggles and slaps my arm. “b***h!” she whispers and we

both chuckle.
When we enter the lounge, Ricardo gets up and looks at her with a stunned expression. He doesn’t say anything, he just looks at her. “Doesn’t she look beautiful, Zander?” I say, trying to give him a nudge. “Yes, lovelier than ever.” Zander says, nudging Ricardo. He seems to snap
out of his trance and smiles at her.
He walks over and takes her hand. “You look absolutely stunning, Robyn.” He says and kisses her hand and she giggles. “You look very handsome yourself.” Robyn says shyly. “Okay lovebirds, you better leave, or you will lose your reservation.” I say and they both look at me. I
shoo them out of the door while they chuckle.
Zander stands behind me and puts his arms around me and rests his chin on my shoulder. ”
They grow up so fast, don’t they?” he says. “Yes, they have finally left the nest. What shall we
do with ourselves?” I asked and we both burst out laughing. When Ricardo’s car is out of sight,
Zander pulls me inside and closes the door.
“I know what we can do with our time,” he says and kisses my neck. “I think I know what you
want to do,” I say, giggling. “I’ll give you a head start,” he says and slaps my butt. I started
running upstairs, giggling all the way. I had just reached the door when he caught up with me
and picked me up and carried me to bed.
He lays me down and starts kissing me. My phone starts ringing and we break the kiss.
Zander pulls me up and hands me my phone off the bedside table. I don’t recognize the
number, but the area code is familiar. “Liz speaking hello,” I say when I answer.
“Hello Liz, it’s Mary. We met in the park. Do you remember me?” the woman asks, and I can
hear it’s an elderly woman. “Thank God, I am so glad you finally got in touch, Mary. I have been
trying to find you since the day we met.” I said. “Yes, I was away visiting family for the holidays. I just got back and saw your ad. The security at the park also gave me your number.” She says.
“Can we please meet up?” I asked her. “I would love that child. Can you come to me? I have
been a bit under the weather.” She says. “Of course I will. Can you send me your address and I
will swing by tomorrow.” I said. “Can you come by tomorrow evening? I will make dinner.” She says and I smile.
“I would love that, thank you, Mary. Should I bring something? I am an excellent cook.” I ask
and she chuckles. “No, just bring yourself. It’s my treat.” She says and I chuckle. “Will do. I am
so glad you called. I have a great surprise for you.” I said. “I am looking forward to it and
seeing you, I will send you the address tomorrow afternoon. Good night, Liz.” She says.

“Good night, Mary. See you tomorrow.” I said, and ended the call. I look at Zander and smile brightly. “Was that really Mary?” he asks. “I am not sure, but it did sound like an old woman. And she said the security at the park gave her my number. She was out of town visiting relatives,” I say, and Zander nods.
“Did you get her last name?” he asks and I frown. “s**t, I didn’t even think to ask. But she will send me her address, and she is cooking me dinner.” I said. “I am coming with you. I don’t want you to meet her alone.” He says and I frown. “She is a little old lady with a walking stick, Zander. What can she possibly do to me?” I asked.
“I am not willing to risk your safety. You don’t know for sure if it really is Mary.” He says. “We can swing by the park tomorrow and confirm with security.” I say and he nods. “That’s a good idea, but I am still going with you.” He says. “Don’t you think you are being a bit much?” I ask. ” Not where your safety is concerned, my Liz.” He says and I sigh.
“Fine,” I said in a huff and threw my phone down on the bed. I stomp towards the door of the balcony and open it and step outside. I need some fresh air. This whole thing is pissing me off. When am I ever going to be able to go anywhere alone?
I hate Kyle for getting me into this s**t. I hate Elaine even more. She is the reason I am not safe. She and her bitchy daughter. Zander puts his arms around me and I rest my forehead on his chest. “I am sorry, my Liz. This will be over soon, and then you can go back to living your life the way you want to. As long as Elaine and Tiff are still out there, you will never be safe,”
Zander says.
“I know, I am sorry I snapped at you. I am just so tired of this bullshit. It’s not fair, Zander,” I said. He lifts my chin up with his fingers and kisses my lips softly. “I know. You have already been through way more than you should’ve. I believe we will find them, but we just need a bit of patience,” Zander says, and I nod.
He leads me back inside and runs me a bath. “Bath, and then dinner and a game of pool.” He says and I smile and nod. “Sounds like fun.” I say. I relax in the bath for a while before he joins me. When our relaxing bath was done, we enjoyed dinner and a glass of wine. Then I kicked his ass in pool and darts.
Robyn always said I was a pool shark and a hustler. I never pretended to suck at the game. I made it perfectly clear that I could play, and I play to win. It’s not my fault if they lose. I am definitely no hustler, I just have really good aim.
The next day, we left straight after breakfast for the park. Zander is adamant on following me around, and I just let him. I know he is worried, but I don’t think Mary would harm me. We got

to the park and headed straight to the security office.
The guy on shift yesterday was off today, but he left a note to say he gave my number to an
elderly lady who was named Mary. Zander was still not convinced, so he tried to call the guy, but his phone was off. The security on shift said it’s normal for them to turn their phones off
or not answer when they are off. They need the break because they work long shifts.
I fully understood, but Zander didn’t. He can be so impatient with others, but never with me.
We strolled through the park for a bit, before I went to have my hair done, while he went to the
office to do some work. Ricardo met me at the salon, and I wasn’t aware Zander had asked
him to come.
He really isn’t going to allow me anywhere alone. At least I got to hear about his date with Robyn. She already filled me in, but it’s good to hear that he enjoyed it as much as she did.
When I was nearly done, none other than Keira walked into the salon.
The minute she saw me, she came over. I just looked at her and rolled my eyes. She was
about to speak, but I raised my hand to stop her. “Don’t make a scene. I am not in the mood for your crazy behavior. I just want to have my hair done in peace.” I said.
“I just wanted to say hello and apologize for my behavior. I overreacted and I am sorry. I hope we can put all the unpleasantness behind us and be friends.” She says. I looked at her and frowned. I am not sure if I believe her supposed sincerity. It looks just as fake as the rest of
her.
