I lift my chin, refusing to back down. “What? What are you going to do?”

I froze, the air sucked from my lungs. My brain wants to ask a million questions, but my mouth has apparently decided to call in sick.
“Our worlds are too far apart,” he explains further. “But if you don’t mind that, we can…be fuck mates.”
Excuse me, what?! Is that what we’re calling it now? Casual sex, rebranded like it’s a new product launch?
A cocktail of emotions swirls inside me–disappointment, longing, frustration. I want him, no question about that. But is this all I’ll ever be to him? Just a fuck mate?
“I don’t mind,” I hear myself say, surprising him.
Did I just agree to this madness? Have I lost every shred of sanity?
