Chapter 37: Did you see them?
Nick
My mind went blank for a second, and then I started to remember what happened two years ago when Killian found out about my marriage to Alaia and offered me the deal. That wasn’t enough for him, the bastard somehow found out about her pregnancy and wanted to get rid of my children.
“I would never do something like that,” I said confidently. Alaia showed a puzzled expression but quickly composed herself. “I find it impossible to believe you. Your grandfather received a call at that moment, it was you, mentioning a problem that needed solving,” she said, and I remained confused. “Since it seems you’ve forgotten, let me remind you.” She inhaled and shifted her position. “It was the day of your wedding, you must remember that, an important date.” She looked me in the eyes and walked over to pour herself a glass of water. “Killian came to my house with two men to ‘persuade‘ me to have an abortion. He said my pregnancy was a problem for you and told me about your agreement, an agreement that would allow you to receive your family’s millions in exchange for divorcing me.”
That son of a b***h.
That was the reason Alaia disappeared without a trace. It was all my grandfather’s fault. “That’s not true,” I assured her. “I never knew about your pregnancy. He found out somehow and never told me,” I said vehemently. If I had known, everything would be different.
“And you expect me to believe you?” She laughed humorlessly. “Are you going to tell me the agreement that putting all your family’s money in your hands isn’t real? That you gave up our marriage for money?”
I remained silent for a few seconds, clenching my jaw. It’s only part of a poorly told story.
“It’s real, however…”
“I don’t care, Nick. It doesn’t matter to me anymore, and if you want us to continue this conversation ‘cordially, don’t mention it again. I’ve moved on with my life; I don’t want to know anything about the past that tied me to you. The only thing that matters is what you want or will do now that you know about my children.”
I inhaled and moved my neck to calm the frustration of not being able to tell the whole story.
“Our children,” I clarified and she rolled her eyes. “I want to be part of their lives, to make up for the time I lost,” I said seriously, and my ex–wife looked at me over the rim of her glass, pausing mid–movement.

“Now you care,” she said angrily.
“Damn it, Alaia! I didn’t know about your pregnancy and would never have asked you to abort. The story would be different if you had told me.”
She laughed again.
“You didn’t give me the chance, remember?”
I closed my eyes, recalling every word I said that damn day.
“I don’t believe your words. I don’t believe in your sudden interest in being a father. If you want to see my children, you’ll have to prove to me that you genuinely want to be close to them.”
“They are my children,” I said, frustrated. She had no idea how much I wanted to see them.
“I already told you, Nick, nothing, and no one will force me to let you see them now.” She lifted her chin. She looked like a fierce animal defending her cubs, and I couldn’t deny that I liked it.
“Fine, is that how you want it?” I asked.
“Yes, now I ask you to leave if you have nothing more to say.” I inhaled through my nose. I have much more to say, and I will tell you, you can be sure of that.
Feeling a bitter taste knowing I hadn’t seen my children today, I turned around and opened the office door, freezing, when I saw Paula and the blonde girl carrying the children in their arms.
“Nick,” Alaia said behind me.
“Their names,” I turned to her, remembering that Cedric mentioned the girl’s name at dinner, but it could have been fake, like everything they said to make me believe they were his.
“Alana and Noah,” she responded with her arms crossed. I nodded, feeling a lump in my chest and recalling how many times she told me how much she liked the name Noah.
I left the house and got into my car, dialing my cousin’s number.
“Did you see them?” my cousin asked as soon as he answered the call.
“No,” I exhaled. “Alaia won’t let me see them. She doesn’t believe me. Killian asked in my name to get rid of them while she was pregnant.” I gripped the car’s steering wheel tightly.
“What did he do? What?”
“That’s not all,” I growled. “We’ll talk later. I’m leaving, follow me.”
“Okay.”
I drove through the streets, thinking about the few seconds I was able to see them, the past that weighed heavily at that moment, and everything Killian did behind my back. Damn old

man.
I arrived at the entrance of the house of the man I call grandfather.
They let me in, and I got out of the car. As soon as I reached the door, I waited for Will to join
- me.
“What are you going to do?” my cousin asked.
“What I should have done a long time ago. I ask you not to interrupt me this time. He’s the reason I didn’t know about Alaia’s pregnancy and my children, the reason I’m not with them
now,” I said, and he nodded.
The butler opened the door, and we walked in.
“Children, to what do I owe the honor of your visit?” we heard him say cheerfully from the second floor. He soon appeared at the top of the stairs and then started to descend with a smile on his lips–one that made me sick.
Once he reached the bottom step, I walked directly towards him and, without saying a word, punched him in the stomach and nose, causing him to fall to the floor and push a glass table in the process, which shattered into a thousand pieces.
“What the hell is wrong with you?!” he yelled, touching his nose, which was broken and already bleeding. “Call security!” he shouted at the butler.
“Don’t move,” I heard Will say, followed by a groan from the man.
I clenched my fist tightly before landing another punch on Killian’s chin.
“What do you think you’re doing?! I can sue you for this!” He got up and tried to contain the bleeding.
“Do whatever you want, I don’t give a damn about what you can do to me.”
“Have you lost your mind, i***t? Do you think you can come to my house and attack me without any apparent reason, just because you feel like it?” He looked at the blood on his
hands.
A dark laugh escaped from me.
“Because of you, I didn’t know about my children. I haven’t seen them grow.” He looked up at
me, stunned.
“Children? What children?” he said with difficulty, the blows causing him pain.
“Alaia’s children, the ones you wanted her to abort.” The words came from deep within my
chest.

He closed his eyes and seemed to reproach himself for something.
“That girl,” he mentioned angrily, and I took the impulse to hit him again, opening a cut on his eyebrow.
The glass door of the room began to rattle, and I realized my grandfather’s security men were
trying to get in. I looked at Will, who had the butler trapped, holding his arm behind his back.
I leaned down and pointed at Killian.
“I warn you, if you touch a single hair on my children, Alaia, or anyone close to them, I won’t be
responsible for my actions,” I spoke with a voice filled with rage and stood up.
“You’re just like your father, always letting feelings dominate you. You’re not worthy of carrying
my surname.”
“Don’t talk about my father when he can’t defend himself anymore. Thank God he wasn’t like
you.” I looked down at him.
Killian’s men managed to get in and approach William and me.
“Don’t touch me,” I signaled one of them, and he stopped.
“Call a damn ambulance, you bastards, useless, you’re fired!” he yelled at them. I watched
them move and leave that house, the broken glass crunching under my steps.
At the door, I gave Killian one last look. He watched me, appearing as if he wanted to kill me.
The feeling is mutual.
Will patted my back, and we both headed to our vehicles. I took something to clean the blood
off my hands.
I ordered my phone to call a lawyer. As soon as the gates of Killian’s house closed, I wanted to
talk to someone who had nothing to do with the company. I didn’t know who was associated with my grandfather.
“Nick Garnett?”
“Josh,” I said. He’s an excellent lawyer and has great success even though he’s very young.
“Long time no see. I was surprised to see your name on the screen.”
“Indeed, it’s been a while. Well, I heard you’re a lawyer now, one of the good ones,” I said. He
laughed.
“Don’t believe everything you hear,” he joked. “I imagine you need my services.”
“That’s right, you’re not wrong. I just found out I have two children.”

“Congratulations, Garnett.”
I nodded. “I didn’t know they existed. They are a year and a few months old.”
“Wow,” he said.
“The mother won’t let me see them, and I want to do everything possible to see them as soon
as possible,” I explained.
“I see, I’d like more information,” he mentioned, and I started telling him what happened. “We’ll
need a DNA test.”
“We don’t need them, they’re mine. I know their mother won’t deny it,” I exhaled.
“Alright, I’ll start working on it tonight. I’ll call you if I need anything else. You should know we can’t do anything until Monday; it’s impossible to start the case on the weekend.”
“I understand. Thank you, Josh,” I said and ended the call.
Two more days. I ran my hand through my hair and remembered the exact moment when everything went to hell.
