Chapter 6
Daisy turned her head, her eyes locking onto Heather’s, burning with pure malice.

“You really are impossible to kill,” Heather sneered. “Not even a fire like that could finish you off.”

A smug grin curled on her lips as she pulled out a small mirror and held it up with a glint of wicked satisfaction.

“But once you see what you look like now, you might just wish it had.”

Daisy’s heart sank the moment her gaze landed on the reflection. The left side of her forehead down to the corner of her eye was scorched, the skin twisted and raw, a brutal reminder of the fire.

Her pupils contracted involuntarily.

Heather’s eyes practically sparkled with cruel delight.

To a woman, having her face disfigured like that… it was worse than death.

She leaned in, her voice laced with false sympathy.

“Do you really think Desmond will still want you now?”

But the breakdown she expected never came.

Daisy stayed eerily calm.

Heather’s smirk faltered, eyes narrowing just before she made her move. In one swift motion, she grabbed a scalpel and shoved it into Daisy’s hand, then slashed her own face.

Daisy barely had time to process what was happening before Heather let out a bloodcurdling scream.

“Ah! Sister, no!”

Right on cue, Desmond burst through the door. Heather flew into his arms, sobbing dramatically.

“Desmond!”

He froze, eyes darting between her and Daisy.

“What happened?”

Trembling in his embrace, Heather whimpered, “She… she tried to destroy my face…”

Blood dripped down her cheek, and Desmond’s eyes hardened with rage. He turned toward Daisy, gaze sharp and accusing.

Their eyes met. Daisy’s expression didn’t waver. She calmly reached for the scalpel that had landed beside her bed, then without hesitation, hurled it straight at Heather.

The scalpel flew like a silver streak.

Heather’s eyes widened in horror, and she let out a shriek. Desmond reacted on instinct, throwing his arm up to shield her. The blade sliced a deep gash into his forearm.

“Desmond!” Heather cried, grabbing at his injured arm, her face painted with panic and concern.

But his gaze was fixed on Daisy, dark and filled with bitter disappointment.

“You always said we wronged you, that we favored Heather… What do you have to say for yourself now?”

Daisy didn’t flinch.

After everything, she owed no one an explanation. Death had brushed past her, and it had stripped away any illusion she once clung to.

Her voice was cold, flat, and fearless.

“Didn’t she claim I tried to ruin her face? Not following through would’ve made me a liar.”

“Daisy!” Desmond’s voice turned to ice. He stared at her as if seeing her for the first time.

At that moment, their parents rushed in, faces twisted with shock and disbelief. They looked at Daisy like she was a stranger.

Heather’s voice trembled with a delicate blend of guilt and martyrdom.

“Sister… I know you’re upset because Desmond saved me instead of you that night. It should’ve been me… I should’ve been the one disfigured. If taking the knife from you will ease your resentment, I’ll do it again. Just don’t hate him anymore, please.”

Desmond’s expression darkened, his brows furrowing.

“You ran into that fire to save her,” he said firmly. “If anyone deserved to be saved first, it was you. And besides, who I save is my choice. No one has the right to question that. Especially not someone who resorts to violence.”

His voice, once warm, now cut like steel.

But Daisy? She didn’t even blink.

No amount of reasoning, justification, or apologies could erase one simple truth: they never cared. And now, she didn’t either.

When she heard Heather’s plea, Daisy actually smiled, a quiet, ghost of a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.

“I don’t blame you,” she said softly, her tone oddly peaceful. “In fact… I should thank you. Thank you for showing me how fragile the human heart really is.”

The room fell into stunned silence.

“She hasn’t learned a damn thing,” Samuel snapped, his voice sharp.

“From now on, you’re confined to this room. You don’t take a single step outside.”

With that, they escorted Heather out like she was royalty, while Daisy, once again, was left behind.

Alone.
