Chapter 10
When Sebastian finally awoke, it was already midday, and his friends, along with Vanessa, were gathered around his hospital bed, playfully teasing him.
“Sebastian, you really stole the show this time with your heroic rescue.”
“Vanessa was truly moved by your actions; such a debt of gratitude surely deserves a romantic reward!”
“So, Sebastian, now that your wish has finally come true, when will we celebrate with a big gathering?”
Vanessa blushed at the teasing, her eyes shyly meeting Sebastian’s as she spoke with a soft, gentle voice.
“Sebastian, I never imagined you’d go to such lengths for me. Once you’re all better, can we be together?”
Her words sparked an even louder chorus of encouragement from the group, chanting for them to get together. But Sebastian, the center of this lively conversation, remained silent. His gaze swept repeatedly across the room, searching for a particular face that seemed to be missing.
As his silence stretched on, the room gradually grew quieter. His friends, confused by his sudden change in demeanor, asked, “Sebastian, what’s wrong?”
“Where’s Vivian?” he asked, struggling to keep his anger in check. “Why isn’t she here?”
Vivian had been testing his patience lately, constantly dismissing his words, getting into arguments with Vanessa, and even forgetting their anniversary. He hadn’t confronted her yet, but now she wasn’t even here when he was in an accident?
He waited for an answer, but the room fell into an awkward silence. When he looked up, he saw the bewilderment etched on their faces.
A sinking feeling of dread settled in his stomach, and when no one spoke up, he reached for his phone.
Just then, Vanessa spoke up, her voice tinged with disdain. “You two are divorced now; of course, she wouldn’t be here. Why are you asking about her, Sebastian?”
The mention of a divorce sent a shock through Sebastian. He reacted with disbelief and anger, shaking off Vanessa’s hand as she tried to touch him. “What divorce?! Who said I divorced her?”
Now it was his friends and Vanessa who were taken aback. They had assumed from Vivian’s certainty that Sebastian had initiated the divorce long ago, but now it seemed he was unaware of it. This was certainly unexpected.
Vanessa, feeling slighted by his reaction, suppressed her resentment and complained, “I’m not making things up. When you got hurt, she didn’t even wait for you to wake up. Quinn asked her to stay and care for you, but she handed him a divorce certificate, claiming you were already divorced and she wouldn’t stay. If you don’t believe me, ask them!”
As soon as Vanessa finished speaking, Quinn and the others nodded vigorously, producing the divorce certificate Vivian had left with them as proof. But Sebastian still refused to believe it.
“A divorce? How could I not know about it? That certificate must be fake!”
Despite his words, a gnawing unease crept into his heart. He fumbled for his phone, found Vivian’s contact, and hastily sent her a message:
[Come to the hospital immediately. We can pretend this whole divorce thing never happened.]
He tried to calm himself, convincing himself that she was merely acting out, as she had in the past. But then he saw the ominous red exclamation mark next to his message.
He tried calling her, only to find his number blocked. Anger surged through him, and without thinking, he ripped out the IV from his hand, determined to leave, causing a flurry of alarmed reactions.
