Chapter 21
At the orphanage, the director suddenly informed Eleanor that everyone needed to undergo a mandatory medical examination. It seemed non–negotiable.
Not wanting to put the director in a tough spot, Eleanor agreed.
She spent nearly the entire day at the clinic, undergoing not only the usual tests but also some that were typically reserved for severe illnesses.
A week later, when her complete test results were finally ready, Kane, who had been absent for days, reappeared.
Eleanor was reviewing her medical report when Kane arrived. Noticing her preoccupation, he casually asked, “So, how did it go? Everything alright?“.
Without looking up, Eleanor let out a dry laugh. “Haven’t you already seen the results?”
“And since I didn’t find anything wrong, are you disappointed?”
Kane felt a cold shiver run down his spine, as if his intentions had been laid bare. Yet, he maintained a calm gaze as he met Eleanor’s eyes. “You figured it out?”
Eleanor closed her report with a soft thud. “Lillian and Mrs. Yates haven’t shown up. Who else would go to such lengths to study me but you?”
Kane’s lips twisted into a rueful smile. “I guess nothing escapes you.”
He then relayed everything Lillian had told him, but Eleanor didn’t seem surprised. She simply asked, “So what’s next? Examining my body was just the first step?”
“What’s your next move? Hire an exorcist to drive out any demons?”
“Or maybe just lock me up, torment me physically, break my will, and force me to explain what’s really happening?”
Kane’s eyes filled with a pain he couldn’t conceal. “Ellie, you know I’d never hurt you.”
“Whether you believe me or not, I just want to say that having your full–body check–up done was only to understand your health.”
“You once said that if you died, I would too. I don’t know what it all means, but I’m worried that my health might affect you.”
Eleanor’s expression softened for a brief moment, but it quickly vanished. When she looked at Kane again, her face was impassive.
“You survived a car crash as a child and got a second chance at life. Shouldn’t you treasure it?”
“As for your current condition, when the pain becomes constant, you grow numb to it. Coughing up blood too often becomes something you can get used to.”
It was as if Eleanor had once felt such pain herself, to the point of numbing her nerves. She had

already guessed the cause of Kane’s current state–likely a ripple effect because she hadn’t. died and had become a different Eleanor.
Thus, he should cherish his second chance at life.
Eleanor’s words indicated her stance towards Kane. She never wished for his demise.
“Ellie, thank you.”
Kane understood her intention. Then, as if recalling something important, he added, “Oh, there’s something else I think you’d want to know.”
With that, he pulled a laptop from his bag and showed Eleanor a lengthy video.
After Lillian had made her demands, Kane realized she could no longer be trusted. She had become a ticking time bomb for Eleanor.
So, he leaked Lillian’s misdeeds, making sure everyone knew about them. This way, even Selene couldn’t protect Lillian.
As expected, the Yates family approached Selene, demanding that Lillian be removed from the Yates Group.
The video content showed Selene confronting Lillian.
