Chapter 18
In the end, Selene took Lillian and the demolition crew away, but Kane stayed behind.
Eleanor didn’t pay him any attention and was about to leave when Kane called out to her.
“Ellie, can you sit with me for a moment?”
“Today’s my birthday.”
“In the past, you were always there for my birthday.”
Eleanor turned her head, giving him a frosty glance.
“Are you trying to be sentimental now?” she retorted. “Where was this affection when you and Lillian were plotting against me?”
Kane’s face paled slightly.
“You figured it out?”
Eleanor let out a cold chuckle. “Lillian is cunning, but she’s a fool–a complete airhead.”
“Her tricks only work on those who are blind and naive enough to genuinely favor her.”
“To outsiders, they’re laughably transparent.”
“If you told me she stabbed me in the back, I’d believe it. But to say she could single–handedly secure permits to seize this land–given her lack of brains–is just unbelievable.”
“And if I’m not mistaken, it was Mrs. Yates who subtly suggested the idea.”
“Lillian heard about it and immediately tried to put it into action.”
“And as for you, Kane, you gave the nod to those above, hinting to Lillian that it was feasible, which is why she boldly brought the demolition crew here!”
Upon hearing this, Kane stood there, stunned for a moment.
Then he managed a faint, bitter smile.
“I forgot how clever my Ellie is.”
“Back in school, even though you couldn’t attend regularly due to health issues, you always aced your exams. You were the talk of the school, a true genius.”
Kane thought that if Eleanor hadn’t been burdened by the Yates family, even if she were born into a modest family, her brilliance would have shone just as brightly.
Even now, living in the orphanage, Kane knew she had secretly participated in several international competitions.
The internet was abuzz with the name “EY,” a prodigious artist, who was none other than Eleanor.

Besides that, she was studying self–defense, finance, and even tea ceremony…
His Ellie was truly living life to the fullest, with dedication and seriousness!
So how could he, like the Yates family, hold a bias and think that only by studying abroad could she find a greater stage for her life?
And it was precisely because of this that he found it even harder to let go of Eleanor.
“Ellie.”
Before Eleanor could walk away, Kane quickly added, “Lillian is a madwoman; you need to be careful of her.”
But I will always protect you.
Eleanor didn’t stop, and her silhouette soon vanished into the night.
Over the next few days, Lillian didn’t reappear.
Then, unexpectedly, one day the police came knocking.
They said they had received a tip–off that Eleanor’s room contained contraband.
Eleanor didn’t resist. She couldn’t, and she allowed the officers to search her room.
In the end, they found a small package of illegal substances under her bed.
At that moment, both Kane and Selene were present.
Kane immediately stepped forward to explain, “This isn’t Ellie’s. I’m willing to stake the entire Quinn Corporation’s reputation that this doesn’t belong to her.”
Selene, equally distressed, pleaded, “There must be a mistake. You can’t wrongfully accuse Ellie like this.”
