(Celeste’s POV)
The crimson light of the Blood Moon made the waters of Moon Lake shimmer like molten fire.
Around us, the festival buzzed faintly in the distance, but here near the water’s edge, it was
quieter. Too quiet.
I kept my distance from Diana, who approached with a smile so sweet it nearly stung. My wolf
stirred uneasily. I didn’t trust her for a second.
“Celeste, look!” Diana pointed at the lake’s edge, her voice dripping with enthusiasm. “Do you see those rare moonflowers blooming?” Her golden eyes sparkled, her wolf’s aura falsely
submissive.
I didn’t follow her pointed finger. Instead, I kept my gaze locked on hers, trying to piece together her game. “They’re beautiful,” I said simply, my voice cool.
Diana tilted her head, her smile widening. “You should get a closer look. They only bloom during the Blood Moon, and they’re said to carry powerful blessings.”
“Is that so?” I kept my tone even, but my silver–scarred wolf bristled within me. Something
wasn’t right.
“They are,” Diana insisted, moving a step closer to the lake. Her excitement seemed real, but I noticed how her hand twitched, how her wolf radiated tension beneath the surface.
“Blessings for those with good intentions,” I added pointedly, watching for her reaction.
Her golden eyes briefly narrowed, just a fraction, before the fake cheer returned. “You always had an eye for magical things, didn’t you?” she said coyly, a soft laugh leaving her lips.
Nina, standing by my side, stiffened. Her silver–gray wolf was coiled, her protective instincts on high alert. She said nothing, but her presence was like a shield at my side.
“Come closer,” Diana said, her voice dropping into a strangely persuasive tone. She gestured toward the moonflowers with deliberate movements, as if coaxing me. “Even Alexander used to say you had a special connection to the flowers that bloom near Moon Lake.”
Her use of his name was calculated. I knew it. A distraction, a subtle jab aimed to unsettle me. But I stayed still. My wolf snarled softly in my mind, unimpressed with Diana’s tactics.

“No need,” I replied, deliberately stepping back instead of forward. “I can appreciate the view
from here.”
Something flickered in Diana’s expression. Annoyance? Frustration? She recovered quickly, her golden wolf masking the cracks as she let out a light laugh. “Don’t be so shy, Celeste. It’s a
special night. Don’t you want to feel part of the magic?”
“I feel enough of it from here.” My voice was lined with faint sarcasm.
Her wolf bristled this time. Subtle, but there. Four years in Moon Shadow Prison had
sharpened my ability to sense hostility, and Diana’s was impossible to miss.
She moved again. Closer this time. She was too close.
“Come on,” she urged, her tone sweeter, almost wheedling now. “You’re always so composed.
Why not let yourself enjoy something for once?”
Nina took a small step forward in warning, her gaze fixed on Diana like a blade. “Lady Celeste
prefers to stand where it’s safe,” she said carefully, her tone polite but firm.
Diana’s head snapped toward Nina, her golden eyes flaring briefly. “I wasn’t speaking to her
guard,” she said sharply, her wolf baring its teeth beneath the surface.
Before Nina could reply, I lifted a hand to stop her. My gaze didn’t leave Diana. “It’s all right,
Nina.”
The words were calm, but they carried a warning only Diana would understand.
Her lips curved into a wider smile, but her wolf surged toward me. Subtle. Quick.
Too quick.
In one sudden motion, Diana lunged toward me, her intent clear. She wanted me in the water.
But she didn’t count on the reflexes I’d honed in Moon Shadow Prison. I sidestepped easily, her
momentum carrying her forward like a falling stone.
Her golden eyes widened as she tumbled, arms flailing, into the icy waters of Moon Lake with
a tremendous splash.
The sound rippled through the quiet air, drawing gasps from the pack wolves nearby. Murmurs spread through the crowd, their shocked whispers filling the growing silence.
Diana’s head broke the surface as she flailed and gasped, the sacred waters surrounding her turbulent with her panicked movements. Her wolf surged beneath her, desperately trying to
regain control.

I stayed where I was, my silver–scarred wolf vibrating with bitter satisfaction. Watching her
struggle, knowing her attempt to humiliate me had backfired, filled me with a cold sense of
triumph.
It didn’t take long for the attention of everyone nearby to shift toward the commotion. Among
them, Alexander’s white wolf reacted first, his ice–blue eyes sharpening as he surged forward
instinctively.
“Diana!” he called, his concern instant and genuine.
Lucas was next, his russet wolf radiating a protective energy as he prepared to join Alexander.
His movements were swift, his intent clear.
But Scarlett stepped in before either could act. Her honeysuckle scent flooded the air as she
latched onto both their arms, her emerald eyes shimmering with perfectly–timed tears.
“No, Alexander!” she pleaded, her voice trembling with faux distress. “You can’t!”
His ice–blue eyes snapped to her, confusion clear in his gaze. “Scarlett, move.”
Her grip tightened, her trembling intensifying. “It’s forbidden for unmated males to touch her
during the Blood Moon! You know that!”

Lucas hesitated, his green eyes flicking to the gathered pack wolves who had gathered as spectators. Their murmurs grew louder, their judgment heavy in the air.
Scarlett turned her wide, tear–filled gaze on me next. She fell to her knees with a soft sob, her hands clasped as if in prayer.
“Please, Celeste!” she begged, her voice soft and broken. “Save her! You’re the only one who
can do it!”
My wolf growled in disgust at her performance. Even Lucas shifted uneasily, sensing the
hollowness in her cries.
Nina stiffened beside me. “My lady-”
I held up a hand, silencing her. The crowd was waiting. Watching. Judging.
With deliberate calm, I stepped toward the water.
The cold hit me instantly as I dove in. It burned against my silver scars, the pain sharp and biting, but nothing compared to the tortures I’d survived. My wolf pushed through it, her
strength unwavering,

I reached her easily. Too easily.
Through the icy water, her golden eyes locked on mine. Fear flashed in them as she realized
who had come to save her.
And then I smiled.
It wasn’t a warm smile. It wasn’t even kind. It was the smile I’d learned in Moon Shadow Prison, the smile of someone who’d endured hell and come back colder.
Diana’s panic rose as I grabbed her. My grip was firm, unyielding.
She thrashed harder, instinctively trying to break free, but she was no match for me. Not here.
Not now.
I pulled her under.
Her movements became erratic as the water swallowed her light. The sacred waters that should have prayed over her felt like chains around her wrists instead.
The gathered wolves didn’t speak. No one dared intervene as the scene unfolded before them.
Even Scarlett’s sobs quieted as the moment stretched.
Diana’s struggles grew weaker with every passing second. Her golden eyes, wide with terror,
met my violet ones again.
I didn’t release her. Not yet.
Only when her body went limp, her wolf retreating to the corner of her mind, did I haul her back
to the surface.
The cheers that erupted were sharp and relieved. Pack wolves rushed forward to help me drag
Diana onto the shore.
Scarlett was there in an instant, her emerald eyes glistening with artificial gratitude.
“Thank the Moon Goddess!” she cried, crouching beside Diana and cradling her lifeless form. ”
You saved her!”
I said nothing. My violet gaze turned toward the lake, where the ripples from Diana’s fall were already fading.
Hours later, Diana opened her eyes in the pack house. Her golden gaze flew around the room in frantic confusion before landing on me, seated calmly by her bedside.

She stiffened instantly, clutching the blanket tightly around herself.
“What… why are you here?” she rasped, her voice trembling.
I met her gaze, my calm mask firmly in place. “To keep an eye on the one I saved,” I replied
evenly.
Her wolf whimpered, retreating to the farthest corner of her mind. The memory of the water, of
her legs giving out, was fresh in her gaze.
She swallowed thickly, her hands twisting in the blankets. “You… you dragged me under!”
I tilted my head slightly, allowing the edge of that cold prison smile to return. “Did I?”
“Yes!” she hissed, her voice rising in panic. “Scarlett-“.
“Ah, yes. Scarlett,” I cut her off smoothly. My tone made her words falter. “Your dear friend who
.. prevented her own brother from saving you.”

Her lips froze halfway through forming a retort. The realization dawned slowly, her golden wolf
wincing at the implications.
I leaned back slightly, watching her like one might watch a cornered animal. Silent. Calm.
Composed. But ready. Always ready.
