A Little Anxiety And Some Cake
Samantha
Word was out on all the floors that I was Dashawn’s fiancé. Ninety–eight percent were happy for us. There were always some that weren’t like Sheryl, the agent he had a dinner meeting with, to discuss one of her clients. The one that felt a spark at dinner, and he totally shot
down before the first time he took me to his club. Was that only three weeks ago?
When we walked into Star Media hand in hand, each of us smiling, Sheryl was right there at
the reception desk, arms crossed, tapping a heeled toe and glaring at me in particular.
“Sheryl, is there a reason you are glaring at Samantha?” Dashawn asked, as we stopped in
front of her.
“I just didn’t know that becoming your PA warrants an engagement ring. If I knew that, I would
have applied for the position,” she snootily said.
“And what makes you think I would have asked
think I would have asked you to marry me, if
you were my PA?
Samantha here is the love of my life. I have been captivated by her for years, and once we
reconnected, I realized she was it for me. You have never meant anything to me, so tell me,
how would that have worked out for you?”
I wanted to stick my tongue out at her, but I was being a professional.
“Well, I mean, we could have started something. You never know, you could have ended up
liking me,” she said, with a pout.
A grown a*s woman pouting like that just didn’t look cute, I thought.
“Oh, I know, that would have been a resounding h*ll no: Now, stop staring at my girl like that,
or we’re going to have a problem,” he said, giving her the Money biker stare. We may have
spent too much time at the clubhouse.
I cleared my throat and whispered, “You’re the CEO, not Money.”
He looked at me startled and then gave me a sheepish grin.
“Learn your place in the company, or you’re going to have to find somewhere else to work.”
“You need a reason to fire me, you can’t fire me just because I like you, and feel I’d make a
better choice as your fiancé.”
This f*cking b*tch. I took a step forward, but Dashawn squeezed my hand.

“New York is an employment–at–will state. You can be fired for no reason at all. Now, unless
you want that to be the case, I would advise you to move along.”
The receptionist had a cup of coffee in front of her face. I could tell she was trying to hide her
smile, but her eyes sparkled with glee.
Sheryl huffed and actually stomped her foot and then walked away.
Dashawn chuckled and leaned down to peck my forehead. He then pulled me along to our
bank of elevators. Once we were in and the doors were closed, I turned and grabbed him by
his suit jacket and pulled him to my height. I slammed my mouth to his, and he groaned as he wrapped an arm around my waist and lifted me so he wasn’t bent so far over. I dangled
there as we devoured each other’s faces. The door pinged, and we heard a couple of giggles.
Dashawn pulled away and we both looked. Cia, Kimber, and Tally were standing there smiling.
“Well, now, is that any way to conduct yourself in the workplace?” Cia asked, with a straight
face.
Kimber snorted, “Like Tally and I didn’t just walk in on you and Ashton making out on your
desk?”
Cia blushed but then shrugged. They followed us towards my desk. Sandra was frowning when we stepped up.
“Hey Sandra, what’s up?” I asked.
“I can’t find Mike. He and I were supposed to pack all the holiday decorations that were left
from the Christmas party and take them to the building’s basement.”
I stiffened, Cia, Kimber and Tally, since we told her what happened, all shuffled in their shoes
and looked at Dashawn.
“He’s not back from vacation? Hmm, I wonder what happened over the holiday to make him not show up?” Dashawn said, looking completely innocent.
“You don’t think he found another job, do you?” Sandra asked.
“I don’t know, did he voice his dissatisfaction with the company?” Dashawn asked.
“Well, no. He actually was kind of excited about Samantha working here. Before you two
started dating, he said something about wanting to ask her out.”
Dashawn’s left brow lifted.
“Did he? Maybe he heard about us and quit? Could he be embarrassed to come back?” I said.

“Maybe, or maybe he just did a no call no show. If he did, he’d have a very good reason. It’s
not like him to do that though,” she said.
“Well, guess we will see if he shows up later today or even tomorrow. If he doesn’t though, I will give him a week, and if he still hasn’t shown up, I will call for a wellness check at his place, and he will also be terminated,” Dashawn said.
“That’s generous of you, a whole week,” Kimber said.
“He has been here for a couple of years. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt,” Dashawn
intoned.
“That’s so nice of you, Dashawn,” Sandra said, with a smile. We all walked into Dashawn’s
office and I shut the door.
I let out a harsh breath and had to sit on the office couch. I started to hyperventilate. Cia,
Kimber and Tally came running over to me and surrounded me.
“It’s okay Sam, just breathe,” Cia said.
“Dashawn, get her some water,” Kimber snapped.
He walked over to his personal mini fridge and got me some water. He cracked it open and
handed it to me. He knelt down in front of me and massaged my knees, as he looked
worriedly on.
“It’s okay, Sweet Girl. No one will be able to find him.”
“How do you know? Our DNA is all over him,” I said, tears springing to my eyes.
“We have a pig farm where we take the bodies of our enemies to get rid of them,” Tally said.
My eyes bugged out, “Why do you take dead bodies to a pig farm?”
She looked at me weird, then to her sisters and brother.
“She didn’t grow up in our life, Tally,” Kimber.said. Tally nodded.
“Pigs eat a dead body like it’s a rare delicacy. They devour everything, bones and all,” Cia said.
I gagged, “Remind me to never eat bacon, sausage, or ribs at the compound ever again.” They laughed, but I wasn’t kidding.
“We don’t kill those pigs and eat them, silly,” Tally said.
“Everything will be okay, baby. Mike is long gone. In another week, I’ll put in his termination
papers for a no call–no–show reason. Not that I need one. But it’ll look better if the cops come

sniffing around.”
I took some deep breaths and then nodded.
“I’m okay now. Thanks guys.”
Dashawn stood and helped me up. He gathered me into his arms and hugged me to his chest. His lips skimmed the top of my head.
For the rest of the day, I fielded calls from clients. Made appointments with Dashawn for the week. I brought lunch for him and a client who he introduced me to as his fiancé. He eyed me up and down and smiled at Dashawn.
“You lucky dog,” he said.
I later found out that Dashawn and Josh, the man he introduced me to, who was a rapper
named JaiRi, were long–time friends.
My phone rang on my desk and I picked it up.
“Samantha,” I said as I typed in the last appointment for the week.
“Samantha, there is a woman here at reception who says she is your mother. She has five men with her, with plates of cake slices in each hand.”
I smiled. “Send them up please.”
I went to Dashawn’s office and walked in. He looked up from a contract he was reading and
smiled.
“Hi, baby.”
“Hi. Um, my mom is here with cake. I am guessing she wants us to pick a cake flavor?”
“Excellent, I love cake,” he said, tossing the contract aside.
I heard the elevator ping and I quickly walked around the corner.
“Mom,” I said with a smile.
“This place is gorgeous.”
“I’m surprised you are here. I thought you and dad were going back to the clinic.”
“Your dad did. He doesn’t need me to sell the clinic. It’s all in his name. I’ve decided to stay here and house hunt. Tawny is letting me stay in the casita while I do that. But today! decided to stop at a cute bakery that I heard was the best in New York City. They make wedding cakes. Tawny said she was taking care of all the food. So I want to do the cake So

here I am, with ten slices of cake of different flavors,” she said excitedly.
Dashawn and I both smiled.
“You know, Georgia, we could build you a house on the compound,” Dashawn said.
Her eyes lit up, “Really! That would be ideal since we will be working on the compound.”
Dashawn took out his phone and texted something. He looked back at her and smiled.
“They will start it in the spring. You can tell my Uncle Bane and Uncle River how many
bedrooms and bathrooms you want and what the layout you want, and they will draw it up and make it happen.”
For the next thirty minutes, we tried the slices and figuring out which were our favorites.
“I like the lemon and raspberry fillings. But I also like this airy chocolate filling,” Dashawn
said.
“I like the lemon and strawberry fillings,” I said. After debating, we chose to make the main cake with lemon filling and then three sheet cakes with chocolate, raspberry and strawberry fillings.
Mom and the men left after that. I looked at Dashawn and smiled.
“We just picked out our wedding cake,” I said, excitedly.
“We sure did, Sweet Girl. We have five weeks until our wedding after this week. Where would you like to go for a honeymoon?”
“Somewhere warm,” I said.
He chuckled. “Leave it to me.”
