Chapter 49: Disturbing Information
Zander
I am pacing in the waiting room mentally chastising myself. What the f**k is wrong with me? I should’ve listened to my gut and never went inside that building. I hate that Liz was in danger yet again. When will it ever stop?
The door opens and Dr. Willis came walking in. “Is she okay Wayne?” I asked. “She is just fine.
She just needs to stay so we can monitor her. I don’t know if the chloroform will have an
adverse effect on her, so its best she stays here.” He says and I breathe a sigh of relief.
“Thanks doc, can I please see her?” I asked. “Sure, follow me.” he said, so I followed behind
him. I went into the room, and she looked like she was just peacefully sleeping. I am grateful
that she is okay, but I am reminded of the last time she was here. At least this time she wasn’t
hurt.
I kissed her forehead and sat with her and held her hand. I played with the engagement ring
on her finger and couldn’t help but smile. She is all mine, now and forever. Something like this
can’t happen again. I can’t lose this woman. I won’t survive it. She has had my heart for so
long, if she dies, so do I.
I don’t know how long I sat there until I heard her groan, so I looked up. “Wakey, wakey, my Liz.” I said and kissed her forehead. She smiles but doesn’t open her eyes immediately. She
scrunches her nose and eventually opens her eyes and looks at me. I lifted the bed a bit and
got her some water.
“Small sips,” I say, and she smiles and takes a sip of the water and moans. “My mouth feels
weird,” she says in a raspy voice. “Have some more water, I will get doc Willis.” I say, and she nods and takes another sip, while I press the call button. A minute later, a nurse walks in and
smiles when she sees Liz is awake.
She goes to get Dr. Willis and he came by a few minutes later to check on Liz. When he is
done, I can finally talk to her and maybe get some answers. He leaves to give us privacy and I
help her sit up. “I am sorry I got distracted. I just turned my back for a second. Please tell me
what happened?” I asked Liz.
“It happened so fast, I didn’t even have time to defend myself before she put something over
my mouth.” Liz says, frowning. “Who? Did you see who grabbed you?” I ask. “Martha,” she
says and I freeze. “Martha?” I ask and she nods. That f*****g b***h! Was this what she had
planned when she gave me that, not so subtle, threat?

“Did she say anything?” I asked. “All she said before everything went black, was that it’s all my fault,” Liz said. “I need to make a quick call. Lie back and relax. I will be back in two minutes.” I say and she nods and smiles. I stepped out into the hallway and called Chris.
“Hey Zander, is Liz awake yet?” he asks me. “Yes, she just woke up. It was Martha that attacked her. Do you have any more information on her?” I asked him. “I do, but you aren’t going to like it, Zander. I am on my way to you with the information. I had a suspicion it was Martha that attacked Liz.
I have just pulled up to the hospital now. Agent Perez and I will be there shortly. Don’t let Liz. out of your sight.” He says and I frown when he hangs up. What does agent Perez have to do with Martha? And why couldn’t he just tell me on the phone? Damn it, things are going to s**t again.
“Chris and agent Perez are on their way. They have news for us, and apparently, we won’t like it. It’s about Martha.” I told Liz when I sat down next to her again. “Why would she attack me like that? I know she doesn’t like me, but to go to those lengths. Something feels off about everything. And how did she know about Mary?” Liz asks.
“I am asking myself those same questions, my love. I can’t answer them for you just yet. I am sorry I brought her into your life. I never imagined she was this vicious and unhinged.” I said and kissed her hand. “It’s not your fault, you know that. Isn’t that what you always tell me?” she says and I smile.
“Okay fine, I will take my own advice.” I said and chuckled. Just then, Chris comes in with a
folder in his hand, followed by agent Perez. “Hey Liz, how are you feeling?” Chris asks her and she smiles. “I am all good. Hopefully I can leave soon.” She says and he smiles. Agent Perez
also speaks to her, but I look at Chris and wait for him to talk.
He looks at me and sighs and hands me the folder. “Meet Maria Diaz, aka Martha Silverman.
Horis Diaz’s older sister and the real brains behind the cartel.” Chris says, and my eyes widen
as I look at the information in front of me. “How did we miss this?” I ask, still in shock.
“She was pretty well hidden. Every aspect of Martha Silverman’s life was above board. She
was never on our radar at all.” Agent Perez says. “f**k!” I yell in frustration. I allowed that
woman into my life and my parents‘ home. She was their friend, damn it.
“I am sorry Zander, but there is more,” Chris says, and I look up at him. “It seems like she was the one behind the attempted home invasion at your parents‘ home. Maria Diaz’s name came up during the investigation, but we could never find anything about her. We didn’t know that Maria and Martha were the same person. We never even suspected Martha at all.

She had some work done on her face, but Martha is definitely Horis’s sister.” Chris says. I feel
like running out here to track her down myself. If I get my hands on her, I will kill her myself.” So, she befriended my parents so she could rob them and kill them?” I asked.
“Looks like it. I had your parents‘ case reopened. I hope you don’t mind. There was always
something that bothered me about their accident. I checked in on the drunk driver’s family,
and they apparently moved to a very affluent neighborhood after his death.
There was no life insurance that paid out, so no one knew where they got the money from. The
house they live in now was purchased in cash. They started spending money like they won the
lottery. That alone is very suspicious to me and agent Perez agrees. Everything points to the
drunk driver being paid to crash into your parents,” Chris says.
I don’t believe this. Could it be that my parents‘ accident was a set–up? The case was closed
because the driver of the pickup truck that killed my parents was drunk. His blood alcohol
level was three times the legal limit. That’s why we all agreed that it was just a tragic, ill–fated
encounter. But this changes everything. If that b***h is the reason I lost my parents, I am
coming for her with everything I have.
Liz squeezes my hand and I look up at her. “Are you okay?” she asks me. “No, if this is true, that b***h will pay for what she did.” I say and she nods. “Your parents‘ death now forms part
of my investigation into the cartel. Do you mind if I borrow your guy?” agent Perez asks, nodding at Chris.
“You can have him for as long as you want. I just want to know what really happened and why.
”
I said, and they both nodded. They stayed a bit longer and asked Liz a few questions about
the encounter. One thing still bothers me though. “How did Martha know to impersonate
Mary?” I asked Chris.
“I don’t know Zander. We all know about Mary, but no one outside our circle and the lottery
office staff know the details about her. The ad and the interview didn’t specify the details she
had access to. I will see what I can find out.” Chris says and I nod. “Please Chris, and thank
you to both of you.” I say before they both leave.
Dr. Willis comes back and discharges Liz after she begs him to. She promised to rest at home,
and he reluctantly agreed. I just need to monitor her and that is never a problem for me. I will
definitely be keeping a close eye on her. She is my reason for existing, so I will always ensure
she is taken care of.
The driver came to collect us and took us back to my parents‘ place. It was already 3am and I
was bone tired. The minute I walked into the house, a feeling of sadness washed over me.

Chapter 49: Disturbing Informati…
Knowing they were probably murdered, it just hits me differently now. But why? Their death didn’t benefit Martha at all. She wasn’t in their will and I never gave her anything either.
Besides, she is wealthy on her own. She got a hefty settlement in her divorce, thanks to me, and she was already an established businesswoman when my parents met her. Nothing makes sense to me. There has to be something I am missing. I won’t rest until I figure this
out. I have to make it right and avenge my parents. They didn’t deserve to die.
It’s so sad to think that Liz and I have another thing in common. Both our parents were
murdered, and we were made to believe it was accidental. This cartel also infiltrated both our
lives. Why is everything coming at us all at once? I thought that with the cartel out of the
picture, we would be okay. Tiff and Elaine are a big problem, but they don’t have access to
proper resources.
But now that I know Martha is the mastermind, I am more worried about Liz’s safety. If she is
backing them and helping them, then they are a bigger threat than I gave them credit for. I
need Tim on this too. He will sniff out all the properties Martha has quicker than the FBI. We
have to find where she is hiding, and hopefully it will lead us to Tiff and Elaine too.
“I am so sorry about your parents, Zander. I am here for you for anything you need. We will get to the bottom of this,” Liz says, and I smile and kiss her forehead. “Thank you, my Liz. Just being in your presence always makes me feel so much better. Get some rest, you heard what doc said.” I said, and closed her eyes while I held her in my arms.
After I made sure Liz was asleep, I called Tim, and he agreed to help. He is such a great guy. I helped him pro bono when he had nothing, so he is very loyal. When I made all the calls I needed to, I got into bed next to Liz and pulled her into my arms again. I am so drained, that I
fall asleep immediately.
