Chapter 36: I Remember
Zander
“We are going on a road trip. I am so excited,” Liz says, smiling. “Tell me what your parents are talking about while you are driving on this exciting road trip.” Dr. Lubbe asks Liz in her trans–like state. “Daddy is angry at mommy. Why are they fighting? They never fight,” She says. frowning. “What did daddy say to mommy?” he asks her.
“Daddy said that aunty Elaine is an evil monster. But mommy said it wasn’t true, and it was
just a mistake.” Liz answers. “What did aunty Elaine do?” Dr. Lubbe asks. “I don’t know. No…….
I… don’t want to remember.” Liz stammers out. “It’s okay, Lizzie, you are safe. It is safe to
remember. You are in a safe space. What did daddy say aunty Elaine did to you?” Dr. Lubbe
says.
“Daddy said she kept me under the water on purpose. She wanted to drown me.” Liz says a
and
starts to sob. I tried to get up, but Dr. Lubbe shows me to wait. “You are safe now Lizzie. Aunty
Elaine can’t hurt you. What else did daddy say?” Dr. Lubbe asks. “Daddy said that we needed
to get as far away from her as possible. And mommy wouldn’t listen. Then the car came and

“It’s okay Lizzie, no one will hurt you. You are safe Lizzie, safe from all harm. You are only watching. Just watch and tell me what happened. What happened to mommy and daddy.
when the car came?” Dr Lubbe asks in that same soft soothing tone he had been using this.
whole time.
“The car came so fast, and wanted to push us off the road. Daddy kept yelling that he couldn’t stop. And mommy was yelling too. I was so scared and then the car pushed us again, and I looked out of the back window and I cried.” She says sobbing. “It’s okay Lizzie, you are safe.
We are only watching. Just watch and tell me why you were crying.” Dr. Lubbe says.
“I saw aunty Elaine, and she wanted to push us off the road. She looked so scary just like daddy said. She is an evil monster. I closed my eyes, so I didn’t see her. Mommy kept yelling and at her to stop, but I heard aunty Elaine tell mommy to die. I was so scared, but mommy took my hand and held it, so I opened my eyes. Then it felt like the car was flying, and when he car was flying, and when we stopped flying, I couldn’t see anything anymore.” She says, still sobbing.
That f*****g b***h. She actually killed her own sister. Now I understand why Tiffany went to such lengths too. She takes after her mother. “It’s okay Lizzie, you can get out of the car now. Get out and walk back to the door. Do you see the door, Lizzie?” Dr. Lubbe asks her.

“Yes, I see it. I can’t go, I need to help mommy and daddy. They are bleeding, and I need to wake them,” she says. “They will be okay Lizzie, they need you to go to the door. You can get. them help when you go through the door. Someone is waiting to help you, Lizzie. Open the door.” Dr. Lubbe says. “Okay,” she says.
“I opened the door, but it’s too dark to see. I am scared, I need to help mommy and daddy.” Liz says. “Don’t be scared Lizzie, you are safe. Look carefully. Do you see the stairs? Take the first
step onto the stairs. Do you see it, Lizzie?” he asks her. “Yes, I can see it,” she says.
“Walk up the stairs slowly. Walk to the very top. Someone is waiting to help you, Lizzie. Walk
slowly and carefully up the steps. Count the steps with me, 1, 2…” Dr Lubbe says. “3. 4.5”
Liz says and continues counting until she gets to twenty and then Dr. Lubbe interjects.
“And 20, can you see the stairs now Lizzie? It’s so much brighter now, isn’t it? Do you see the
door at the end? Someone is waiting to help you. You just need to open that door and open
your eyes,” he says. “Open your eyes, Lizzie. You are safe.” He says, and her eyes snap open.
That was so cool, yet freaky at the same time.
Liz sits up and looks at Dr. Lubbe with wide eyes. “It’s okay Liz, you are safe.” He says smiling
softly at her. “What do you remember?” he asks her. “I remember everything.” She says and
Starts crving. I am next to her in an instant and pull her into my arms while she sob
uncontrollably.
I look at Dr. Lubbe and he nods at me. “She will be okay, she just needs to let it out.” He says and gets up and grabs a box of tissues. He busies himself with notes, while I soothe Liz.
When the crying dies down, and she is just sniffing, she looks up at me.
“That b***h killed my parents and tried to kill me. She killed her own f*****g sister,” she says. I know love, we will do everything we can to make her pay.” I say, and she nods, and she has a determined look in her eyes.
“She tried to drown me in the swimming pool. That’s the memory I suppressed. That is why I am afraid of her. My dad saved me, and she pretended it was my fault, and she was trying to save me. Later that same day, she pulled me into the bathroom and threatened me to keep quiet, or she would kill my dad. I remember it all. The accident and everything that led up to it.
She was driving a black van. We could all see her as clear as day. My dad couldn’t stop the car because the brakes weren’t working. My mom pleaded out of the window for her to stop. But all she did was laugh, and then she yelled at mom. ‘Die b***h‘ was the last thing she said to my mom. How could I forget that? I should’ve remembered. Then she wouldn’t have gotten
away with murder.” Liz says.

I have so many
things running through my mind at once. My emotions are a mess. “None of
what happened is your fault, Liz. Your young mind couldn’t handle the truth and the trauma. It
chose to lock those memories away as a way of protecting you.” Dr. Lubbe says.
*I understand what you are saying, but if I had remembered, I could’ve helped the police. I said. “My dear, if you had remembered, you would’ve been in a worse state. You were already traumatized by the attempted drowning and then the threat to your father’s life.
You blocked that memory to protect yourself, because you knew you couldn’t handle the truth. at that time. Now you are ready. That is why your mind started giving you subtle warnings to try to get you to remember.” Dr. Lubbe says.
“You are right, I just wish I remembered earlier.” I said, feeling a bit deflated and very sad. He gives me a few tips about how I can relax my mind to help with my emotions. He really is good, and I am thankful to him for helping me remember what that b***h did.
Zander was there for me and held my hand through it all. I don’t know what I would do without him. Now I need to make my aunt pay. But it’s been so long. My word won’t be enough without
evidence to back it up. Then I remembered something.
“I just remembered something else,” I told Zander as we drove home. “The van Elaine used. It had an image of a hawk on the bonnet.” I said. “That’s something. There couldn’t have been many vans around at that time like that. I will get my PI to start digging. And I will contact the detective so we can speak to him before we leave tomorrow.” Zander says, and I smile.
“Thank you
you, Zander. Not just for this, but for everything you do for me. You are the kindest, most amazing man I have ever met.” I say and he smiles. “You are welcome, my Liz.” He says. “I feel emotionally drained. But I want to get the ball rolling on the investigation again.” I say,
and he nods.
“We can call him when we get home,” Zander says, and I nod. When we arrive back home, we go straight to his office. He calls the detective, and we tell him everything that I remember. “I knew you knew something, but we didn’t want to push you. The doctor said that it will set your
mind back, and you may never recover.
I had a little girl of my own at the time, and I wouldn’t want anyone to make choices like that for her. That’s why I decided to leave the case open. I got into some hot water because I didn’t want to close the case. Luckily, I am still at the same station, and I am now the station.

commander. I should probably have reached out to you, but I didn’t want to uproot your life.
It will be my honor to make this my last case. I am retiring soon, but I won’t go anywhere until I close this case with you.” He says. “Thank you so much Commander Carlson. Is there. anything else you need from us? We are leaving tomorrow on a week’s vacation,” Zander says. “No, but I will let you know if I do. Get your man to send me what he can dig up.” He says. “I will get someone to drop off the recording of Liz’s session with the doctor.” Zander says.
“Thank you, that will really help. I knew your aunt did it. I just couldn’t prove it. Then she moved out of town for a bit, probably to lie low. We will get her Liz, I promise you on my honor. I won’t let you down again,” he says, and I smile. “Thank you, Commander, stay in touch.” Zander says and hangs up.
“I am so glad he is still around,” I said, and Zander nodded. “Let’s get you soaked in the tub so you can relax, and then straight to bed. You had. an emotional day, and you need to rest a bit.” Zander says. “That sounds perfect,” I say. He picks me up and I giggle. “I am emotionally drained, but I can still walk,” I say, and he chuckles.
“Let me take care of you Liz.” He says and I smile and kiss his cheek. “Okay, big guy,” I say and he chuckles. He really meant it when he said he wanted to take care of me. He helped me bathe and put me to bed, before he got in next to me and just held me in his arms until I fell asleep.
I truly am a lucky girl to have this wonderful man in my life. He is so patient and gentle with
- me.
