His manner was dismissive, discouraging any further question. I was alright with that.
I’ve had enough of the incredible tale of human wolves for the night. I was surprisingly full and energized from eating that roasted, unsalted hare meat.
As we started to leave, I grew painfully aware of the fact that we were alone. Just him and I. He walked behind and I could feel his eyes moving over me in the dim light.
The buzzing sound of a phone vibrating made me feel my bag and pocket to see if it was mine. But it wasn’t. As he turned away to take the call, it was my turn to check out his a$s.
Damn he’s hawt.
I drank in his features, trying to eavesdrop on the call at the same time. It was impossible to make out the whispered words. Maybe I was too distracted by his attractive backside to hear what he was saying.
He ended that call quickly and started typing something on his phone.
Seconds later, the phone buzzed again while his eyes were on the screen. He held it to his ears. This time, his voice was not so low.
“Yeah, alright. I know, I’ll let myself in. Sure. See you soon,” he said.
My stomach went sour at his tone. That was a woman, no doubt.
“Let’s get going,” he muttered with eyes still on his phone.
“Yeah,” I replied. But he caught my arm like earlier when I took a few steps.
“This way,” he said.
The soured feeling in my stomach had turned into irritation now. I truly needed to reread the agreement to see what it said about seeing other people.
“Did you send the soft copy like you said you would?” I asked,
“Ah,” he mumbled. “Skipped my mind.”
“Of course, it did,” I mumbled.
I’m your little UNIMPORTANT secret.
“To be honest, I didn’t really think you needed another look at it. But finding you with your mother this evening had thinking I was wrong. You do need to reread that contract.”

“At what point do you reveal the chains I ought to free you from?” I couldn’t keep the edge from my voice.
“When we’re sure that you’re cured. I’d say one month from now at least. You heal, you release me. Did you already forget?”
He sounded as annoyed as I felt. Walking ahead of him and talking, it was hard to focus on the path before me.
“You’re not the only one with short memory, Mr. Carlisle!” I replied. “Just this morning, you said you’ll send a soft copy, but you forgot too. What, you had better things to deal with than your irrelevant secret wiiii… shit!”
A thick branch had me by both ankles as I fought to keep my balance. I lost my footing and was on the way down when strong, powerful arms surrounded me.
Rather than fall on my face on the cold, hard floor, I landed against Jake’s sturdy chest with his hands and legs cradling me.
“Uh,” he breathed against my hair. “Are you alright?”
When I lifted my eyes, he was looking down at me, waiting for an answer. His eyes were that now–familiar shade of iridescent blue again.
Without my permission, my body pressed further into him as he attempted to move. His breathing grew rapid and hot against my face. I shifted to quickly get up from on top of him. That was when I felt it.
The thick, stiff bulge below his waist, swelling against my stomach. An erection. Something primal deep within me responded. A heat so intense pooled between my thighs, soaking my core. His hands, which now rested on my waist and below my breast, grew tensed.
In an abrupt move and with such incredible strength, he hoisted me and himself back on our feet.
The throbbing between my legs turned into a dull ache. He started to step back, releasing me, but I was not having that.
Lifting myself on tiptoe, I pressed my lips to his.
His heart gave a loud thud as our lips touched. He stood rigid while I tried to coax his lips to work with me.
Slowly, gradually, they grew soft against mine. His rigid hands began to relax. He let me lead the kiss, opening to me, kissing me back with growing intensity.
