Chapter 0148
Sara POV
We reached the resort within a half hour as Nick hurriedly led me to his private elevator.
As we got to the penthouse, Jake stood by the door, waiting. He gave a slight bow. A smile played in his eyes as he greeted,
“Hello, Miss James. Welcome.”
I frowned, still unaccustomed to his friendly manner.
Nick had a smile on his face as the two exchanged words through the link.
“Uh thanks,” I said to the beta.
As he stepped aside for us to enter, I glanced at Nick again and said,
“I really have to ask. Why’s he being polite and friendly?”
It was Jake who replied.
“You know why.” He gave an exaggerated shrug.
“I need this job, Sara James, and you’re going to be my Luna. So I can’t be mean to you anymore.”
I was going to reply that he had never been mean to me. That he’d only ignored my existence. Except when he was following orders from his jackass boss.
But instead, I nodded sarcastically, breathing,
“Ah, I get it.”
The beta entered the elevator and waved at both of us as the door began to close.
“He’s just happy that I’m fixing us,” Nick said once we were alone.
“His own words: “I’ll take happy, in love Nick to depressed, irritable Alpha anytime, all day.”
I was secretly thrilled that I hadn’t suffered alone these past few days. Scratch secretly. I was openly smiling like a fool.
It wasn’t that I thought Nick was alright without me after the marking. Thanks to our bond, I knew for sure that he wasn’t. But it felt so good to hear him say it for the simple fact that he was a very proud male.

We were going to ascend the familiar stairs when a sound distracted me. It was the chef. He offered a brief smile with the customary bow.
“We’ll eat in my chamber,” Nick informed him.

Soon, we sat across from each other with a mouthwatering meal of mashed potatoes and steak. I couldn’t decide if I was hungry or just eager to be done with the food and move to the next part.
The place soon grew quiet and I knew we were alone in the penthouse. Eating with the Alpha felt so natural yet so strange. New. His manner was easy and unhurried as he cut the meat into smaller pieces for me.
“Eat this first,” he said gently, then filled my glass with red wine.
“You know I have to get back home tonight, right?” I said after swallowing a mouth full.
“You are home, Sara.” The frown was mingled with a smirk.
“I mean my dad’s. Alex would stay awake till I make him go to sleep. And it’s only Tuesday tomorrow. We still have work and school.”
“Here, eat this,” he said again.
With my
fork, I picked up the large piece of meat and pushed it into my mouth.
I was only starting to realize how hungry I had been. It felt like I hadn’t eaten in days. And I hadn’t. Lovesickness had made swallowing food impossible for me. But now, I was healed. I was happy and joyful. And starving.
For the Alpha, I had learned that silence meant refusal, so I repeated,
“So I’ll have to get back home tonight.”
“I’ll get you back before midnight,” he replied.
“My dad will-”
“He knows we’ll make love, Sara. Don’t let that worry you. The moon is at its peak. I’m sure he knows this Alpha couldn’t let his mate leave without taking care of her.” He winked.
I felt a tingle in my stomach that had nothing to do with the food.
Quickly, I reverted my eyes to my food, picking up the wine glass to take a slow sip. I was not a prude or shy. But the food in my mouth had almost gone the wrong way because I was

rushing.

Nick must’ve mistaken that reaction for embarrassment because he said again,
“Sara, your father knows we’ve made love many times. Everybody knows. There’s visible proof. Also, our son doesn’t fall asleep when you think he does. But you already know that.
“He sleeps before 8 PM most times. Except when he’s being rebellious. He has to go to bed that early. It’s important for his growing brain, Nick. And my dad would never force him. Also, Janice expects me home before 8.”
As I spoke, it occured to me that I was trying to get him to rush his food too. I was impatient for the part where we got naked on top of his magnificent bed.
As the corner of his lips lifted into a smile, I feared that he may have caught my inner sinful thoughts.
“Little Alex doesn’t sleep at 8, Sweets. Don’t worry about his growing brain, it’s doing fine. He gets enough rest and play. Eat this once you’re through with that one.”
Adjusting the dishes, he placed another portion of steak beside my plate. I realized that I had nearly polished off my initial portion.
The Alpha seemed hellbent on making sure I was well fed. This thought came with memories of our past. I recalled how he always reminded me to make sure I ate before we got together.
The memory was no longer painful. It was beautiful. And the meal I was eating at that moment was the most delicious I’d had in a long time. This was the first time the Alpha and I were actually eating together as a couple.
Without warning, he leaned close and licked the corner of my mouth.
“You got a piece of something there,” he said gently.
