Just when he was starting to outgrow that fantasy, his mother had entered his life. The great Elise Reign. Her mate, the enemy, already passed to the stars.
The people he left behind were the woman who bore him and her other children. How he wanted to hurt the older she–wolf. But he didn’t know how and couldn’t even bring himself to devise a new plan. Blood stood in the way of his hatred.
He would hurt her precious son, but the people he cared about were involved with the male. And he couldn’t focus enough to think.
Winning Sara would’ve been something close to revenge. It would’ve made Nick miserable for the rest of his life.
But the town people were right. He didn’t even stand a chance. The f*cking hand of Fate was on their case.
He felt useless whenever he tried to think of a way to hurt Nick. Where did he even begin?
Something interrupted his thoughts, causing him to slow down. There were the howlings in the distance. Which was normal on a night like this. But that wasn’t what caught his
attention.
Someone was following him. Had been following him for a while now. He hadn’t been paying attention because he thought it was Uncle Jerry.
It was another werewolf. They watched him from between the trees. Silent hoovebeats getting ready to follow behind once he started running again.
On nights like these, Avery avoided the beaten paths. He was a lone wolf who didn’t care to make friends. If Uncle Jerry wasn’t racing with him, he avoided other half–bloods and low- ranks that came out to play.
“Who the fuck are you and what do you want?” He asked, irritated by the stalker.
When he turned in their direction, a pair of shimmering cobalt blue eyes watched him from the shadows. They stood many feet away but made no effort to conceal themself.
Avery narrowed his eyes in the dim light to assess the spy.
Their fur was unlike what he’d seen around here. Thick and somewhat glossy. This one didn’t come outdoors often enough. He couldn’t decide if the color was brown or gold.
A she–wolf.

“You’re not from around here,” he said in a gentler tone.
She was no half–blood. Neither was she a rogue or a lone wolf like he was.
“Who are you? What do you want?”
He began walking towards her, feeling drawn to her very presence. And those eyes.
Only a few feet separated them when the word drifted into his consciousness.
‘Mate.‘
“What the fuck!” He stopped.
An intoxicating scent floated by at the same time, reminding him of summer time by the sea.
She turned around and took off.
He followed her calling out,
‘Wait!‘
But she ignored him and she was fast.
He chased after her as they raced on for what seemed like ages. Soon, he dove and wrestled her to the ground, pinning her beneath him with large paws.
She didn’t try to fight him off.
‘Shift,’ he ordered. He wanted to see her other face.
But as she stared up at him, it occured to him that shifting wasn’t necessary. He knew this girl. Had dreamed of those eyes last night and the night before that.
‘You’re new,‘ he breathed. ‘Welcome to Orphic. You shouldn’t stalk a werewolf here at night.’
He didn’t know if it was his heart or hers that drummed in his ears.
A snarl sounded a few feet away, disrupting the moment. He knew it was a Forest Moon
warrior.
“Get off her,” she barked, at the same time coming for the attack.
“Stay away from her, you half–wolf!”
Avery didn’t mind the warning finger pointing at him. His focus were on the girl even as he
lifted himself off her.

She stood up, shaking herself as if dusting off her furs, she took off again.
He was too dumbfounded to do or say anything. Sitting on his haunches, he watched her race off as a soft whimper escaped him.
