Chapter 0142
****
Evening.
Sara’s call came into my phone at 6 PM.
“Hi, how are you?”
I sincerely wanted her to answer that question. But she ignored it and said,
“So we’ll meet at the woods in thirty minutes. Near my house.”
“Why don’t I pick you up for dinner at 6:30. Let’s spend the evening at a nice restaurant instead of the woods. You and I haven’t eaten much in the last five days.”
She went silent. My heart lifted in hope.
“Janice will watch Alex,” I added quickly.
“See you in the woods in the thirty!”
Beep. She hung up.
Well, it didn’t hurt to try.

Minutes later, Sara called Janice to come watch Alex. I knew it wasn’t because she changed her mind and wanted to go out with me.
But I was half–glad that she’d finally warmed up to the nanny I picked. I thought about ordering the female to ignore her. What would that achieve? Nothing.
If Janice didn’t go, she would get someone else to babysit. That teenage girl, for instance. Besides, I was done with being petty. At least where Sara was concerned, I must be sensible. I couldn’t afford not to be.
I’d spent the whole weekend thinking of all the leverage I had. How I could use them to make her live with me. I had a claim now, didn’t I?
But using force would only harden her heart towards me. So I’d put all of those ideas in the trash.
Goddess, how I dreaded meeting her in that wood. And how I itch to be near her.

It was exactly 6:36 when I arrived near her house. Dusk was quickly turning into night as the full moon grew brighter overhead.
Like four years ago, Sara waited beside a tree for me. Her father stood nearby.
Her eyes took on her wolf’s glint as I approached her.
Anticipation. Excitement for her mate.
Which she was determined to contain.
She turned around and started walking further into the midst of trees and shrubs. I followed quietly with her father beside me.
One blink and twilight turned into darkness. It felt like Goddess was in a hurry to screw me
over.
She stopped walking. Her father found a large tree to perch on. He glanced my way quickly
while mindlinking his daughter.
‘You’re alone,’ she said to me.
‘I wanted us to be alone,‘ I replied.
‘I’m glad my dad is here then. We need a witness, Nick.‘
“I suppose we do,” I said aloud.
“I’m ready. You can get on with it now.”
“No, I can’t. That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you.”
“What do you mean you can’t? We agreed!”
“We didn’t, Sara, c’mon.”
“I, Sara!” She began. “Child of Sebastian James, reject you, Alpha Nickolas of the Forest Moon, as my mate and Alpha.”
Ouch!
Please, not again, my wolf whimpered.
The words were ineffective. Yet hearing her say them was painful. It was almost like she’d just broken off my hold.
Her father lowered in his head.

Guess he didn’t teach her that, huh.
Sara waited. Her eyes were glassy now. She wanted to hate me so much that it was heartbreaking.
“It doesn’t work like that, Sara,” I said gently.
“If it did, I wouldn’t dare come here. I wouldn’t come anywhere near you today.
I’m Alpha. You were born omega. You can’t reject me. Life’s unfair like that. Like how I did you wrong, yet you’re bound to me again.”
I moved close to her.
“So do it, then!” She snapped. A tear trickled down one cheek.
“I could never. I need you in my life. I can’t go through another rejection, I’m not gonna make it. It’ll cut deeper-”
“I don’t care. Just let me go!” She screamed, the tears spilling down her cheeks now.
“I can’t be with you, Nick.”
“Sure you can. You need time. And that’s fine. I’ll wait for as long as it takes,” I replied.
How I wanted to gather her into my arms and hold her till she released all of the hurt.
“I will always remember what you did to me,” she said.
“My heart doesn’t remember because of your mark, but my brain does. It is not right to be with you.”
“I’ll make things right if you let me. Can’t you see I’m changing.”
I glanced nervously at Sebastian, who started to move away to give us privacy.
“Sara, I’m desperately sorry for how I treated you. I was confused a–and hurting.”
“You were hurting? You rejected me when you were through with me, Nick.”
“That doesn’t make any sense. I was not through. I can never be. I renewed the contract, remember? I never stopped loving you! I rejected you because I was angry and afraid.”
She went very still. I felt her resolve slipping. For some reason, I had her attention. She was waiting to hear more.
Now, how do I play this? What do I say next?

Chapter 0142
I took a deep breath, deciding to lay aside all pride and bare my soul.
