Chapter 0125
Nick POV
Coincidence! That’s all it was. Eerie as hell, but still a coincidence.
My mother couldn’t be the she–wolf that bore the sergeant. If she were, that would make us brothers. That was nothing short of preposterous.
Even as I thought these things, my head was spinning from what I’d just learned.
‘Get it together, Nick.‘
Sara’s dad was glaring at me from behind his counter. I briefly wondered if he poisoned the coffee as I took the first sip. After pretending to feel my pocket for my wallet, I said,
“I’ll have to owe you. Hope you don’t mind. $1.80 can’t make much of a difference when I’m already in your debt.”
Damn it, I was so bad at this. What was there to say? How do I say it? I was being silly and
pathetic right now.
When I glanced at him, his eyes were no longer hard. It seemed like he was waiting for me to go on. That wasn’t good because I had ran out of words. I should’ve prepared before coming
here. I will next time.
I took another sip. My phone buzzed at the same time, saving me from the awkwardness. It was a text from Lindsey. According to her, my mother had just left my chamber after a chat
with Sara about her “new life.”
“I came to tell you not to worry about your daughter and the little one. You know it’s my turn today, right?” I asked the older male.
He didn’t answer.
“I’m taking little Alex to the city. Show him around a little bit. I imagine Sara would want to return to town today. If that’s what she wants, you’ll have her home before the day runs out.”
I lifted the cup of coffee and added, “Thanks for this.”
I could feel his eyes on me as I walked back to the car. But my focus soon shifted to my phone as I began typing a short text to Sara.
“Don’t mind my mother. I’ll be back soon.‘

A little over an hour passed before I entered the city with my son. Jake was waiting to recieve
- us.
I left Alex with him and quickly went to see the Chief before anything else.
“Alpha.” He gave the customary bow. “Welcome. Come on inside.”
“Tell me what you know about Reese Hawke? Used to work for the Reigns. Drove my mother
around after I was born.”
His reaction was the only tell I needed. The sound of his heart speeding up was loud and evident in the near–empty study.
“I’ve never heard that name in my life, Alpha.” He blinked and looked away.
“We both know you’re lying, Chief. You know he’s dead, right? Of course, you do. Tell me what you know, Alaric! I command it.”
His expression grew sad and solemn as his shoulders sank.
“He worked for the Reigns, Alpha. Close to your mother. A little too close. Your father fired him. Shortly after that, your mother vanished.
Goddess! Please don’t make me, Alpha, please. Ask your mother instead.”
“Go on with the story! He worked close to her. And now she’s taken an interest in his son. Is willing to pay him to take my mate far away! You’re in on this-”
“What did you just say?”
“You heard me.”
“T–the girl’s boyfriend? That’s Rowan? l–i mean Reese’s son?”
“Yeah! That’s ROWAN.”
As I said the words, my heart slammed in my chest. My head rang with memories that were like vague dreams.
My mother calling out,
“Rowan! Row…”
and then trailing off at the look on my father’s face.
At that moment, I remembered how she clasped her hands, begging him.

“It’s a mistake, Zion, please. Nick! I meant Nick! My only baby boy!”
I recalled how my dad wrested her hands from his shirt and stormed out of the house.
We didn’t see him for three days. I was six years old.
“Go on with the story, chief!”
“Fates. How’s it even possible that you know his son?” He looked deeply troubled.
“Oh, I know him. Much more than I care to.”
“All I know is the fact that your mother had an affair. Your parents had problems in their mating life.
You were a few months old when it happened. But your dad, Alpha Zion, he loved her. He kicked her out when he found out. But after thirteen moons, he went after her and brought her back.”
“Does the pack know this story?” I asked gently. It was the only question I could manage. My mind was reeling.
So she had an affair, left home and returned a year later. That didn’t prove the sergeant and I were kin. I refused to believe we were. It didn’t matter that the male had felt familiar to me
from day one. Or that he was Rowan.
The Chief was shaking his head at my question.
“All they know was that your parents had problems, like most mated couples. They knew your father kicked her out. But they didn’t know why. He confided in me and his beta.”
The Chief exhaled deeply like the secret exhausted him.
“He brought her back and reinstated her as his Luna. A lot of time passed, but they grew happy together. Because of you. You were sunshine and fresh air to the both of them in those days, Alpha.
It wasn’t easy and occasionally, they still had issues. But they grew closer. Then your sister was born. Your mother focused on her duty as mate and Luna. And mother. She focused on you and Lily. Your father put the past behind him for good.”
Yeah, after mutilating the homewrecker.
This was the most horrifying tale I had ever heard. It didn’t feel like it had anything to do with my family. These things happened in other households. Not in the home of the Alpha.

I stood up abruptly.
“It’s not in the past though, is it?” I couldn’t recognize my own voice.
“It’s all in the past, Alpha, please, leave it be.” He rose with me.
“That sergeant now understands that you and the girl are bonded. He will never come near the Forest Moon. Please leave things be.”
“Did you say he’ll never come near the Forest Moon?” I asked with a bitter laugh.
