My phone started to buzz again. It was my mother this time. I turned the screen face down, but Jake already saw the caller. The she–wolf became a caller after my dad died. Before that,
it was strictly texting.
“I need to handle business back in the city,” I said idly.
My mind had drifted again. Sara was still sleeping upstairs.
“They have to be watched at all times. The both of them from now on.”
“Rich and I will make sure of that. But you need to head back before one of the elders feel obligated to visit you here. They’ll want to see the project that’s taking so much of the alpha’s attention,” Jake said.
Once Richard left, Jake and I dealt with other business matters. Meanwhile, my mind kept shifting focus to Sara James. The drugs should start to wear off soon. She would be well- rested and clear–headed once she woke up.
The sound of her voice when the piece–of–shit put her on the phone kept echoing in my head. The terror in her eyes when I barged into that room. The sight of her, sitting on the floor with hands and legs tied. These things were straight out of a nightmare.
If I never see such fear in those entrancing eyes again, it would be too soon.
That look did something to my beast that I didn’t want to think about. Even the three–year–old
hadn’t been that terror–struck.
Yet I couldn’t help but see a silver lining in the day’s events. She was upstairs in my bed right
now for one!
She had also learned that I only meant to protect her and our son. Hence the guards. There would be no more walking around carelessly or going about in a cheap town cab like a
pauper.
The meeting with Jake ended soon. As he was leaving, I rose to get another drink when Richard popped his head into the office.
“Oak is here, alpha. He has something to say that I think you should hear from him directly,” he said. “Has to do with your fiance!”
“Ex!” I corrected. “Told you I broke it off.” I was going to say send him in when I heard whispers alongside the bewitching familiar scent.
Sara was awake and loitering about.

With the tumbler in hand, I motioned for us to go the guard.
We were close to the living room when I heard Oak speaking.
“I’m glad you’re OK, Miss. And the kid too.”
When he saw us, he bowed in greeting. But my eyes were on Sara at the top of the stairs who still looked drowsy as hell.
It occured to me that I was ravenous. Goddess! I couldn’t recall ever seeing anyone look so f* cking delicious.
“I’ll take you to Alex and your dad,” Jake said to her, stopping my lustful thoughts.

“How did you know they were hurt?” I asked Oak calmly.
“The warriors have been busy all day. Words got around that it had something to do with the pup… and his mother.”
He swallowed as Rich and I waited.
“That they’re in trouble.”
“What do you know?” I snapped.
“I know nothing, alpha, I swear. Except I figured the city Mooners aren’t supposed to know about those two. But one of them does know. Gamma Faris‘ daughter. Miss White.”
As he said the name, Richard and I exchanged looks.
“You know this, how?” I asked.
“Not long ago, she came here, claiming to be your fiance and soon–to–be young Luna. I told her you’ve got guests. I told her about Miss James, I’m sorry. She was upstairs with you and the pup at the time.”
“When was this?”
“You’d just flown in from the city. The Miss too was out that evening and had just returned.”
Some two weeks ago. The eve of the hearing. Cassie had known about Sara and Alex for that
long.
“I wanted you to know that she knows,” Oak went on. “Miss White knows. But I swear, I don’t know if she has anything to do with today’s… troubles.”
